Scholarship applications being accepted through May

Veterinary students have through May to apply for four categories of scholarships distributed by the American Veterinary Medical Foundation.

The scholarships range in value from $500 to $2,500. More information is available here.

Starting this year, the AVMF will annually award up to eight scholarships of $1,500 each through the Association of Women Veterinarians Legacy Scholarship program. The award will be given to second- or third-year veterinary students, male or female, who demonstrate leadership, scholarship, and involvement in activities beyond classwork. each through the Association of Women Veterinarians Legacy Scholarship program. The Association for Women Veterinarians Foundation, which previously had awarded such scholarships, transferred its money to the AVMF while disbanding during 2013 (see JAVMA, Oct. 1, 2013).

The Winn Feline Foundation and the AVMF also provide an annual $2,500 scholarship to a third- or fourth-year veterinary student who aspires to work in feline medicine. The organizations provide additional consideration for students who are involved in activities benefiting cats, such as research or shelter work.

In honor of Dr. Elinor McGrath, recognized as the U.S.’ first practicing female veterinarian and the first female AVMA member, the AVMF and Juliette Fassett each year award a $500 scholarship to a female student who is in her first, second, or third year of veterinary school and who demonstrates “the strength and determination of Dr. McGrath,” according to information from the AVMF. Fassett is president of Dr. McGrath’s, a company that produces animal shampoos and is named after Dr. McGrath.

Third- and fourth-year veterinary students with a connection to New Jersey are eligible to apply for the Mildred C. Sylvester Scholarship, a $1,000 award the AVMF provides each year to an outstanding first-, second-, or third-year veterinary student.

In February, the AVMF was forming a committee of representatives from the Foundation and the Auxiliary to the AVMA, who together would create guidelines on a scholarship program funded by $2 million the Auxiliary transferred to the AVMF in 2013. The Foundation plans to use only interest from that amount to provide scholarships through the Auxiliary to the AVMA Legacy Endowed Scholarship program.
