Accolades

The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine recognized four of its graduates with the Distinguished Alumnus Award, June 9.

Dr. Robert L. Hamlin (OSU ’58) has spent his entire academic career—49 years in all—at Ohio State. He has trained more than 5,000 veterinary students and has published more than 340 peer-reviewed manuscripts in scientific journals. Dr. Hamlin retired from the veterinary college’s Department of Veterinary Biosciences in 2011 and has remained an emeritus professor since then. He is a charter diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine, with board certification in cardiology.

 

Dr. Gregory L. Parham (OSU ’80) is head administrator with the Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service. He began his career in the Epidemic Intelligence Service at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention before serving as staff epidemiologist in the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service from 1982-1986 and then as branch chief for epidemiology from 1986-1990. Dr. Parham worked his way up within the USDA over the years before being appointed to his current position in 2011. He is a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Preven-tive Medicine.

Dr. Robert G. Sherding (OSU ’73) has served on the veterinary college’s faculty since 1979. He was section head of small animal medicine for 10 years and chair of the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences for 13 years. In 2011, Dr. Sherding retired and became an emeritus professor. He established himself as an international expert on feline medicine by authoring the textbook “The Cat: Diseases and Management” and co-authoring, with Dr. Steve Birchard, “Manual of Small Animal Practice,” with both works in their third editions. Dr. Sherding is a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine.

Dr. John A. Stick (OSU ’74) is chief of staff at Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine’s Large Animal Hospital. He joined MSU in 1977 as an assistant professor and in 1992 was promoted to his current position. Dr. Stick is co-author with Dr. Jorg Auer of the benchmark textbook “Equine Surgery,” now in its fourth edition. He is a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons and has been a member of its board of regents and served as president.
