AAHA

The American Animal Hospital Association honored a veterinary student and several veterinary practices during its annual meeting, March 24-27, in Toronto.

Melissa L. Berning (PUR '11) received the Anna E. Worth AAHA Student Leadership Award for her work in reinvigorating an inactive AAHA student chapter at Purdue University. Berning served two years as chapter president and planned several successful events, including an interview and résumé workshop for students. In addition, she is an executive board member of Purdue's student chapter of the AVMA. Berning's professional accomplishments include an externship at the Animal Accident and Emergency Center in Melbourne, Australia, and assisting with genetic research at Purdue.

Norwalk Veterinary Medical Center of Norwalk, Ohio, was named the 2011 AAHA-Accredited Practice of the Year. The hospital has demonstrated a commitment to continuing education and training by providing frequent practice team training activities.

Upstate Veterinary Specialists of Greenville, S.C., was the first winner of the AAHA-Accredited Referral Practice of the Year Award. Olathe Animal Hospital of Olathe, Kan., took second place honors, with third place going to PAWS Integrative Veterinary Center of Tucson, Ariz.

Academia

Dr. Robert "Bud" Hertzog (MO '56) received the Alumnus of the Year Award from the University of Missouri-Columbia College of Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources' Ag Alumni Association April 7.

Dr. Hertzog earned a bachelor's in agriculture at Mizzou in 1952 before attending Mizzou's College of Veterinary Medicine.

Once he earned his DVM degree, Dr. Hertzog returned to his home in Lee's Summit, Mo., to found the Lee's Summit Animal Hospital. Since then, he has been the official veterinarian for the Kansas City Zoo and the Kansas City American Royal livestock and horse event, a president of the Missouri VMA, and a chair of the AVMA Executive Board and American Veterinary Medical Foundation board of directors.

Organizations

Dr. J. David Haworth (COL '99) joined the Morris Animal Foundation as its new president and CEO June 13. Dr. Haworth formerly served as the director of global alliances for Pfizer Animal Health, a position he has held since 2008.

He will now will oversee a staff of 31, implement the foundation's strategic plan, support fundraising efforts, and ensure that the foundation identifies and funds companion animal and wildlife research. Dr. Haworth replaces Dr. Patricia N. Olson, who led the foundation from 2004-2010.

Prior to his most recent position at Pfizer, Dr. Haworth held various positions with the company, including director of clinical development at Pfizer Veterinary Medicine Research & Development from 2000-2008.
