Group updates guidance on parasite control

The Companion Animal Parasite Council has issued new guidelines relevant to Lyme disease and regional parasitic diseases in general and has updated recommendations for prevention and treatment of tapeworm infection.

For areas where Lyme disease is endemic, the CAPC now advocates vaccination against Borrelia burgdorferi infection for all dogs at risk for the disease. Also, the CAPC now advocates annual testing for regionally relevant vectorborne diseases for dogs and cats at risk for those diseases.

The new recommendations for tapeworm control in dogs and cats relate to flea and lice control, prevention of predation and scavenging activity, and treatment options and protocols.
