Julie A. Ball

Dr. Ball (KSU '95), 39, Kansas City, Mo., died June 6, 2009. She practiced small and exotic animal medicine at Fairview Veterinary Hospital in Independence, Mo. Dr. Ball is survived by her husband, Jason R. Pink, and a daughter.

Lewis S. Bergstrom

Dr. Bergstrom (COL '55), 83, Sonora, Calif., died Aug. 13, 2009. A mixed animal practitioner, he owned Mono Way Veterinary Hospital and Acorn Spay & Neuter Clinic in Sonora for 47 years. Dr. Bergstrom was a member of the California VMA. A past president of the Sonora Rotary Club, he was also a member of the boards of directors of the Mother Lode Fair and WATCH Resources Inc. (a program for the handicapped). Dr. Bergstrom served in the Navy during World War II.

His wife, Barbara, and two sons survive him. One son, Dr. J. Rand Bergstrom (CAL '74), is a veterinarian in Gooding, Idaho. Dr. Bergstrom's grandson and granddaughter-in-law, Drs. Thomas W. Bergstrom (WSU '07) and Mandy L. Bergstrom (WSU '05), are also veterinarians in Idaho. Memorials may be made to the WATCH Program Fund, c/o Sonora Area Foundation, P.O. Box 577, Sonora, CA 95370.

Douglas R. Blaine

Dr. Blaine (CAL '67), 66, Bridgeport, Calif., died Oct. 26, 2009. He owned a mixed animal practice in Bridgeport. Following graduation, Dr. Blaine served as a captain in the Air Force Veterinary Corps for two years, stationed first in Long Island, N.Y., and later in Vietnam. He then worked at Glen Cove Animal Clinic, a mixed animal practice in Vallejo, Calif. From 1970-1986, Dr. Blaine practiced small animal medicine at Petaluma Veterinary Hospital in Petaluma, Calif. He later worked as a clinician at Sonoma County Emergency Veterinary Clinic in Rohnert Park, Calif., and owned a house call practice in Elk, Calif., before establishing his practice in Bridgeport in 1992.

Dr. Blaine was a past president of the Redwood Empire VMA and chaired several committees of the California VMA, including the Long Range and Animal Welfare committees. In 1985, he was awarded the REVMA Meritorious Service Award. Dr. Blaine's military honors include the National Defense Medal, Presidential Unit Citation with Two Oak Leaf Clusters, Vietnam Service Medal, and Air Force Commendation Medal.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia; a daughter; and a stepdaughter. Memorials may be made to the Shasta Abbey Animal Fund, 3724 Summit Drive, Mount Shasta, CA 96067.

Frank W. Canon

Dr. Canon (AUB '44), 93, Albemarle, N.C., died June 16, 2009. Prior to retirement in 1984, he worked for the Department of Agriculture as inspector-in-charge of poultry and meat inspection. Earlier in his career, Dr. Canon practiced mixed animal medicine for 20 years in Texas, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Salisbury, N.C. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club. Dr. Canon's wife, Georgia; a son; a daughter; a stepson; and a stepdaughter survive him. Amy Flores

Dr. Flores (COL '08), 29, Longmont, Colo., died Sept. 21, 2009. She worked for Banfield Pet Hospital in Colorado at Broomfield and Loveland. Dr. Flores also volunteered her services at local spay/neuter clinics and animal shelters. She is survived by her husband, Matthew Little.

William H. Hughes

Dr. Hughes (MO '58), 80, Nixa, Mo., died Nov. 5, 2009. He worked for the Department of Agriculture prior to retirement in 1991. Earlier in his career, Dr. Hughes practiced mixed animal medicine for 26 years in Lebanon, Mo., with his brother, Dr. Joseph C. Hughes (now deceased). He served in the Air Force during the Korean War. Dr. Hughes was a member of the Missouri VMA and National Association of Federal Veterinarians. He is survived by his wife, Vivian; a daughter; a son; and a stepdaughter. Memorials may be made to the University of Missouri-Columbia College of Veterinary Medicine, Columbia, MO 65211.

James A. McOwen

Dr. McOwen (OSU '40), 93, Fort White, Fla., died Sept. 15, 2009. Prior to retirement in 1989, he owned a small animal practice in Delray Beach, Fla. Dr. McOwen also served as veterinarian for Africa USA Park in Boca Raton, Fla. Earlier in his career, he owned a mixed animal practice in Sunbury, Ohio. Dr. McOwen is survived by his wife, Willene; two daughters; and a son, Dr. Scott McOwen (OSU '65), a retired veterinarian in Delray Beach, Fla.

Harry L. Quick

Dr. Quick (ISU '45), 86, Naples, Fla., died Oct. 7, 2009. A retired mixed animal practitioner, he owned several practices in the suburbs of Chicago during his career. Dr. Quick was an Army veteran of World War II and the Korean War, attaining the rank of captain. He is survived by his wife, Joyce; three sons; three stepsons; and a stepdaughter.

Richard B. Winward

Dr. Winward (COL '67), 72, Layton, Utah, died Oct. 21, 2009. He owned A Animal Hospital, a mixed animal practice in Clearfield, Utah. Earlier in his career, Dr. Winward practiced at Layton Veterinary Hospital. He was a past president of the New Zealand Missionary Society, having served in that country as a missionary after high school. Dr. Winward's wife, Pauline, and five daughters survive him. David Wise

Dr. Wise (OSU '51), 82, Clemson, S.C., died Aug. 19, 2009. A diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Preventive Medicine, he served in the Air Force Veterinary Corps from 1959 until retirement as a colonel in 1977. During that time, Dr. Wise held assignments in the Air Force Academy, Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute, and Atomic Energy Commission. Earlier in his career, he practiced in Talmage, Ohio. In retirement, Dr. Wise served as an adjunct professor at Clemson University, where he helped design and construct an animal research facility. He is survived by his wife, Julia.
