Perspective on pet food

Pet food safetyThe AVMA provided input on the labeling and safety of pet food at a public meeting that the Food and Drug Administration held in May. Dr. J. Edward Branam of the AVMA Council on Biologic and Therapeutic Agents and Dr. Charles A. Lemme of the AVMA Clinical Practitioners Advisory Committee presented the AVMA positions.

The AVMA is encouraging the FDA to require that all dog and cat foods provide calorie information and to require that pet food with health claims include a statement indicating that the agency has not evaluated the claims. The AVMA also recommends that the FDA implement incident management strategies to improve the agency's response to unsafe pet foods.
