Approximately $33,000 was raised on a dinner cruise to benefit the American Veterinary Medical Foundation. The cruise took place July 16 during the AVMA Annual Convention in Washington, D.C. Funds from the 2006 cruise tallied an estimated $21,000.

This year's cruise featured a trip down the Potomac River, often referred to as the "nation's river" because it flows through Washington, D.C., providing unmatched views of the city.

Funds raised will advance the care of animals, with an emphasis on disaster preparedness and response, and animal health studies.

Along with AVMA members, a number of international guests were in attendance from Australia, Belgium, New Zealand, and South Africa.

Greg Dennis, an attorney and AVMA member, and his wife, Catherine Lynch, of Olathe, Kan., won the raffle for a maquette, which is a small model of a sculpture called "Team Effort" located outside the AVMA headquarters in Schaumburg, Ill. The sculpture depicts the human-animal bond.

Diamond-level sponsors of the cruise were Dr. and Mrs. Roger K. Mahr, Hill's Pet Nutrition, and Iams Company. The platinum-level sponsor was Nutramax Laboratories Inc. The gold-level sponsors were Dr. and Mrs. Robert P. Gordon, Dr. and Mrs. Kim A. Nicholas, Dr. and Mrs. Robert E. Hertzog, Hartz Mountain Corp., and Novartis Animal Health U.S. Inc.
