AVMA Washington office welcomes Demaree

"I'm very excited to be joining the GRD staff," Dr. Demaree said. "I feel that it is a great opportunity to be both an educator and an advocate for animal welfare and the veterinary profession through the legislative process." A year before receiving her DVM degree from Purdue University in 2002, Dr. Demaree of Merrillville, Ind., served an externship at the GRD. She spent four weeks in the nation's capital learning about the legislative and regulatory process while assisting the division in implementing the AVMA's legislative agenda. During the externship, she wrote an issue brief on a legislative amendment strengthening prohibitions against animal fighting. Dr. Demaree also lobbied members of Congress to support the Minor Use and Minor Species Animal Health Act, later enacted in 2004. "We are pleased to have Angela join the GRD team," said Dr. Mark Lutschaunig, director of the AVMA GRD. "Her strong professional background and passionate interest in politics make her an ideal fit for this position, which primarily deals with animal welfare issues. "Angela will be a strong advocate for the veterinary profession on Capitol Hill, and will help us push our agenda in the 110th Congress." Prior to joining the AVMA staff, Dr. Demaree worked at a companion animal practice in Illinois. She was also an associate at a Standardbred racetrack and completed a surgical internship at an equine sports medicine and surgery practice in Grove City, Ohio. Dr. Angela J. Demaree joined the AVMA Governmental Relations Division March 1 as an assistant director. Her responsibilities with the AVMA's Washington, D.C., office include animal welfare issues, and legislative and regulatory matters pertaining to the human-animal bond, aquaculture, the environment, pesticides, zoo animals, and wildlife.
