Associations

Dr. Paul L. Barrows (MSU '67) has received the Distinguished Service Award from the Wildlife Disease Association. He has served as president and a committee leader of the WDA, as chief of the U.S. Army Veterinary Corps, and as a member of the AVMA House of Delegates. The WDA honored him for 33 years of dedicated service and multiple contributions to the wildlife disease community.

Academia

Lorraine J. Hoffman, PhD, recently received the William P. Switzer Award in Veterinary Medicine from the Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine for contributions to the college that span nearly 40 years. Dr. Hoffman is a professor, microbiology researcher, and interim director of the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory.

Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine has named Carl A. Pinkert, PhD, as associate dean for research and graduate studies and as a pathobiology professor. Previously, he has served on the faculty at the University of Rochester Medical Center and University of Alabama-Birmingham. Dr. Pinkert is a past editor of the journal Transgenic Research.

Government

Dr. Bernadette Dunham was promoted in August to director of the Office of Minor Use and Minor Species and acting deputy center director for the Food and Drug Administration's Center for Veterinary Medicine.

Prior to joining the CVM in December 2002, Dr. Dunham was with the AVMA Governmental Relations in Washington, D.C., for almost eight years. First, she worked as a policy specialist then later as assistant director and acting director.

A 1975 graduate of Ontario Veterinary College at the University of Guelph, Dr. Dunham has been on the faculty of the Department of Pharmacology at the State University of New York Health Science Center as well as director of Laboratory Animal Medicine at the center.

In addition to her duties at the FDA, Dr. Dunham is an adjunct professor with the Department of Biomedical Sciences and Pathobiology at the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine.
