Fobian, Cohn elected to AVMA Executive Board
The AVMA Executive Board elections for districts VII and IX have concluded. AVMA staff counted the mail ballots March 16.
In District VII, AVMA members elected Dr. Clark K. Fobian of Sedalia, Mo. His opponent was Dr. Richard Sibbel of Ankeny, Iowa. At the close of the 2006 annual session of the AVMA House of Delegates in Honolulu this July, District VII will comprise Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota. Members in those states elected Dr. Fobian.
AVMA members in District IX voted in Dr. Theodore J. Cohn of Littleton, Colo. His challenger was Dr. Dean Rice of Chandler, Ariz. District IX also changes at the close of the 2006 HOD session. It will comprise Arizona, Colorado, Kansas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Utah. Members in those states elected Dr. Cohn.
Drs. Fobian and Cohn will take office July 19 at the first regular meeting of the board following the close of the 2006 HOD session. Dr. Fobian will replace Dr. Robert E. "Bud" Hertzog, and Dr. Cohn will succeed Dr. R. Tracy Rhodes.
Dr. Fobian has owned and operated the Thompson Hills Animal Clinic, a companion animal practice in Sedalia since its establishment in 1981. Previously, he was an associate veterinarian at mixed animal practices in Nevada, Mo., and Marshall, Mo. He earned his DVM degree in 1977 from the University of Missouri-Columbia.
Dr. Fobian has filled many roles at the Missouri VMA, including serving as president in 2003. He participates on the association's Veterinary News Network Task Force, Guardianship Task Force, and Legislative Committee and is chair of the Scope of Practice Task Force. During the association's January meeting, Dr. Fobian was named Veterinarian of the Year.
Since 2003, he has actively participated in lobbying for veterinary issues in the Missouri Legislature. He served in the U.S. Army Reserve from 1972-1978 as a medic for the 5503rd Army Hospital.
An active community member, Dr. Fobian is the 2006 president of the Sedalia Symphony Society Board. He is a district delegate of the University of Missouri Alumni Association and a volunteer at the Katy Trail Department of Natural Resources.
Dr. Cohn has held the position of partner at the University Hills Animal Hospital in Denver since 1985. Prior to that, he served at the Aspenwood Animal Hospital in Denver. From 1983-1988, he was a consulting veterinarian at the Denver Zoological Gardens. Dr. Cohn graduated with a DVM degree from Tuskegee University in 1975.
In 1997, Dr. Cohn was named Western Region Practitioner of the Year by the American Animal Hospital Association. He is a spokesperson for the AAHA and has served on its leadership council since 1996.
Additionally, Dr. Cohn serves as the Colorado VMA delegate to the AVMA House of Delegates. He was CVMA president from 1996-1997.
At the AVMA, Dr. Cohn has served on a number of committees, subcommittees, and task forces, including the Committee on Veterinary Medical Informatics, Informatics Standards Subcommittee, Network Subcommittee, Online Editorial Task Force, Online Policies Task Force, and most recently, the Communications Task Force.
Also of note, Dr. Cohn has served on various committees at the Colorado State University College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. He was also president of the Denver Area Veterinary Medical Society from 1986-1987.
