Heifer International has pledged $125,000 in surplus donations to the AVMA tsunami recovery effort to HI projects in Louisiana and Mississippi damaged or wiped out by Hurricane Katrina.

Following the deadly tsunami last December, the AVMA and HI teamed up to raise $1 million for HI community-building projects in South and Central Asian countries devastated by the tsunami.

Donations exceeded expectations, totaling $1,125,000. During the next six months, the surplus $125,000 will aid people helped by some 12 HI initiatives in Louisiana and Mississippi.

Headquartered in Little Rock, Ark., Heifer International works to alleviate hunger and poverty around the world and in the United States by providing impoverished families with live agricultural animals and training in animal care and environmentally friendly farming.
