Obituaries

Dr. Booth (UP '35), 97, Middleburg, Va., died Jan. 13, 2005. Retired, he practiced in Loudoun County, Virginia, for 44 years. During his career, Dr. Booth also served as a veterinary instructor at Morven Park Equestrian Institute and was assistant professor at Lord Fairfax Community College.

A past president of the Virginia VMA, he served on the Virginia Board of Veterinary Medicine from 1956-1966 and as its president from 1965-1966. Dr. Booth was a member of the American Association of Bovine Practitioners and the American Veterinary Society for Study of Breeding Soundness. He served as director and president of the Virginia Poultry Breeders Association. In 1975, the Virginia VMA named him Veterinarian of the Year.

Dr. Booth is survived by a son and a daughter.

Dr. Burch (WSU '43), 85, Hansville, Wash., died Dec. 11, 2004. He was in mixed practice in Seattle, focusing on dermatology and allergy problems. A life member of the Washington State VMA, Dr. Burch served as its president in 1960. In 1990, he received the Washington State University College of Veterinary Medicine's Distinguished Veterinary Alumnus Award.

Dr. Devine (UP '57), 78, Little Silver, N.J., died Dec. 14, 2004. He was in equine practice.

Dr. Goulter (WSU '51), 85, Ilwaco, Wash., died April 16, 2005. He owned Oceanside Animal Hospital in Ilwaco. Early in his career, Dr. Goulter practiced in Longview, Wash. His wife, Elaine; a son; and a daughter survive him.

Dr. Hill (MID '45), 85, Littleton, N.H., died March 19, 2005. Prior to retirement in 1988, he owned a practice in Littleton. Dr. Hill went on to serve five terms on the New Hampshire House of Representatives, focusing on education issues. He had also served as Littleton's parks commissioner, health officer, and member of its board of selectmen and school committee.

Dr. Kramer (MID '46), 84, Silver Spring, Md., died Jan. 8, 2005. He owned Colesville Veterinary Clinic in Silver Spring. From 1958-1992, Dr. Kramer owned Alaska Animal Hospital in Washington, D.C. Prior to that, he owned a practice in New Orleans. His wife, Lorraine; two sons; and two daughters survive him.

Dr. Lyons (KSU '53), 80, Concord, Calif., died Feb. 5, 2005. Prior to retirement in 1996, he worked for the state of California. Following graduation, Dr. Lyons founded a practice in Oskaloosa, Iowa. In 1959, he moved to California, where he established a small animal hospital in Santa Barbara. Dr. Lyons joined the Department of Agriculture as a veterinary medical officer in the early '70s, helping to create and conduct several food safety programs.

His many honors included the USDA Celebration of Excellence Award in 1993. Dr. Lyons' wife, Betty, and a daughter survive him. Memorials in his name may be made to Sutter VNA & Hospice, 1900 Bates Ave. #A, Concord, CA 94520.

Dr. Ott (OSU '38), 91, Long Beach, Calif., died Dec. 6, 2004. He owned Norwalk Animal Hospital in Norwalk, Calif., established in 1948. A World War II veteran, Dr. Ott served in the Army Veterinary Corps. He was past president of the California Veterinary Medical Board, a distinguished life member of the California VMA, and a member of the Southern California VMA.

Dr. Shiplet (COL '76), 57, Albuquerque, N.M., died April 5, 2005. He owned Thunderbird Animal Clinic in Albuquerque for 26 years. Earlier in his career, Dr. Shiplet practiced in Springfield, Va., and Santa Fe, N.M. His wife, Donna, and two daughters survive him.

Dr. Witten (AUB '40), 87, Jacksonville, Fla., died Dec. 9, 2004. Prior to retirement, he owned a practice in Jacksonville, focusing on bovine medicine. Dr. Witten was a life member of the Florida VMA.

Dr. Ziegler (UP '34), 93, Catonsville, Md., died Feb. 22, 2005. From 1935-1994, he owned a practice in Catonsville. Prior to that, Dr. Ziegler worked at the Animal Medical Center in New York.

A past president of the Maryland VMA, he served as its delegate to the AVMA House of Delegates from 1964-1968 and as District II AVMA Executive Board member for six years. Dr. Ziegler also served as president of the Greater Baltimore VMA and was past president and a director of the AVMF. He was a member of the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science and the Maryland Farm Bureau.

Dr. Ziegler received the Maryland VMA's Distinguished Veterinarian Award and The Good Doctor Award in 1979 and 1993, respectively. His son survives him.
