The American Society of Association Executives has added the AVMA to the 2005 Associations Advance America Honor Roll for its Veterinary Medical Assistance Teams. The honor roll certificate cites the AVMA "For your outstanding program, which has resulted in significant benefit to American society."

The VMATs provide veterinary medical treatment and veterinary oversight on animal-related issues and public health during a disaster. The teams are deployed once they receive an invitation from an affected state. The American Veterinary Medical Foundation funds the teams through a yearly grant.

The Associations Advance America Awards honor associations that propel America forward through innovative projects in education, skills training, standards setting, citizenship, and community service. A maximum of 75 associations are added to the honor roll each year. The ASAE, located in Washington, D.C., has sponsored the awards program for 15 years.
