Obituaries

Dr. Ellis (TEX '75), 52, Jacksonville, Texas, died Aug. 31, 2004. He owned Jacksonville Animal Hospital for 28 years and Bullard Veterinary Medical Center in Bullard, Texas, for three years. Dr. Ellis also participated in a weekly agricultural television program and was involved in the Vet Ranch Marketing Association, which established a vaccination program for cattle.

He was a member of the Texas VMA, East Texas VMA, Academy of Veterinary Consultants, and American Association of Bovine Practitioners. In 2005, Dr. Ellis was posthumously named Food Animal Practitioner of the Year by the Texas VMA. He had served as president of the Three Rivers VA. Dr. Ellis also served on the Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce.

Dr. Gay (ONT '50), 78, Dwight, Ill., died Feb. 14, 2005. He was the founder of Dwight Veterinary Clinic, and Pine Bluff Animal Hospital and Lakewood Animal Hospital in Morris, Ill. Dr. Gay was also involved in farm management in central Illinois. He was a member of the American Animal Hospital Association, Illinois State VMA, and Kankakee Valley VA.

Dr. Gay's wife, Hanna, and three sons survive him. One son, Dr. R. Todd Gay (ILL '83), practices at Lakewood Animal Hospital. Memorials toward the Dwight Windmill Preservation Society or American Animal Hospital Association Helping Pets Fund may be sent to 12575 W. Bayaud Ave., Lakewood, CO 80228.

Dr. Haelterman (MSU '52), 86, West Lafayette, Ind., died Jan. 9, 2005. Known for his work on transmissible gastroenteritis virus in pigs, he was a professor of microbiology at Purdue University's School of Veterinary Medicine until retirement in 1984. Dr. Haelterman also contributed to the development of the veterinary school at Purdue, serving as acting dean in the first year of its operation. In 1957, he spent a year as a research veterinarian in Kenya.

Dr. Haelterman received an honorary doctoral degree from the University of Ghent, Belgium, in 1973. President of the Conference of Research Workers in Animal Diseases in 1981, he served on state and livestock sanitary boards and as a consultant to Ecuador during a TGE episode. In 1989, Dr. Haelterman received Michigan State University's Distinguished Veterinary Alumnus Award. The 74th annual meeting of the CRWAD was dedicated to Dr. Haelterman in 1993.

A World War II veteran, he served in the Navy. During that time, Dr. Haelterman received several honors, including the World War II Victory Medal and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with two Bronze Stars. His wife, Violet, survives him. Dr. Pietz (UP '56), 76, Saxonburg, Pa., died Dec. 5, 2004. He owned a practice in Brunswick, Maine, until 1990. Earlier in his career, Dr. Pietz was in mixed practice in southern Butler County in Pennsylvania. He was a member of the Pennsylvania VMA. Dr. Pietz is survived by his wife, Margaret; four sons; and a daughter. Dr. Rawls (AUB '33), 94, Daytona Beach, Fla., died Aug. 29, 2004. Prior to retirement in 1984, he owned Rawls Veterinary Hospital in Daytona Beach. Early in his career, Dr. Rawls practiced in Hartford, Ala. He had served as a district representative for the Florida VMA and on its ethics committee. Dr. Rawls also served as the first president of the Volusia County (Florida) VMA.

His wife, Faye, and three sons survive him. Dr. Rawls' son Dr. B.H. Rawls Jr. (AUB '68), and brother-in-law, Dr. John Langford (AUB '51), are veterinarians in Daytona Beach and Dozier, Ala., respectively. His nephews, Drs. Gary Langford (AUB '79) and David Langford (AUB '76), are veterinarians in Daytona Beach and Bessemer, Ala., respectively.

Dr. Shopmaker (KSU '44), 83, Clayton, Mo., died Feb. 9, 2005. He owned a practice in Clayton for almost 30 years. Dr. Shopmaker also served as a veterinarian at the Animal Protective Association of Missouri in Brentwood, eventually becoming its chief of staff. Governor James T. Blair appointed him to the Missouri Veterinary Medical Board in 1958. Dr. Shopmaker was a past president of the Greater St. Louis VMA. In 2002, he and his wife, Helen, endowed a professorship at the University of Missouri.

Dr. Winkler (COL '50), 85, Auburn, Ala., died Aug. 29, 2004. From 1961 until retirement in 1984, he taught at the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine. During that time, Dr. Winkler established the dairy in the Department of Large Animal Surgery and Medicine. Earlier in his career, he practiced in Watseka, Ill. An Army veteran, Dr. Winkler received a Bronze Star for service in Normandy and the Europe-Africa-Middle Eastern Theater. He attained the rank of major.

Dr. Winkler is survived by three sons.
