Obituaries

Dr. Atkinson (KSU '82), 47, Aubrey, Texas, died Nov. 21, 2004. He established the Country View Animal Hospital in Aubrey. Early in his career, Dr. Atkinson practiced in Kansas for several years. His wife, Doreen; a son; and two daughters survive him. Dr. Atkinson's father and brother, Drs. George W. Atkinson (KSU '43) and Bill W. Atkinson (KSU '70), are veterinarians in Norton, Kan., and Denton, Texas, respectively.

Dr. Bartsch (ISU '91), 40, Wahpeton, N.D., died July 31, 2004. He practiced at Dakota Veterinary Hospital in Wahpeton, N.D., since 1996. Prior to that, Dr. Bartsch practiced at Sheyenne Valley Veterinary Clinic in Harvey, N.D., for five years. He was a member of the North Dakota VMA.

Dr. Crandall (CAL '58), 76, San Dimas, Calif., died Sept. 20, 2004. Retired, he owned the San Dimas Animal Hospital for 35 years. Dr. Crandall was a life member of the California VMA and the Southern California VMA. His wife, Ruth; a son; and a daughter survive him. Dr. Hofmaier (KSU '63), 70, Crofton, Neb., died Nov. 22, 2004. He practiced large animal medicine in Crofton for 41 years. Dr. Hofmaier was a lifetime member of the Nebraska VMA. His wife, Sally, and a son survive him.

Dr. Holm (TEX '43), 91, La Porte, Ind., died Sept. 27, 2004. Prior to retirement, he practiced in La Porte. Dr. Holm was a past president of the Michiana VMA. His two sons and two daughters survive him. Dr. Love (COR '46), 83, New Port Richey, Fla., died Oct. 25, 2004. He owned a practice in Watkins Glen, N.Y., until 1992. Dr. Love continued to practice part-time in the Watkins Glen area until his death. He was a member of the Southern Tier Veterinary Society. Dr. Love served on the Watkins Glen Board of Education for 18 years.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret; two daughters; and two sons. Dr. Murphy (WSU '54), 81, San Diego, died Nov. 17, 2004. A part-time veterinarian for Petco vaccination clinics during retirement, he owned a practice in San Diego from 1977-1994. Following graduation, Dr. Murphy practiced in Los Angeles for several years.

He then worked for the health department of the County of San Diego, including service as a dairy inspector for the entire region. Dr. Murphy also served as veterinarian at the Caliente Racetrack in Tijuana, Mexico. His daughter survives him.

Dr. Peuse (ISU '68), 60, Holstein, Iowa, died Sept. 22, 2004. He practiced at Four Rivers Veterinary Services in Holstein. Dr. Peuse served on the executive board of the Iowa VMA. His wife, Laura; three sons; and two daughters survive him.

Dr. Sprowl (OSU '43), 89, Los Angeles, died June 2, 2004. He was a small animal practitioner.

Dr. Struthers (ONT '54), 75, Ogema, Saskatchewan, Canada, died Sept. 26, 2004. Prior to retirement in 1994, he owned a practice in Ogema. A past president of the Saskatchewan VMA, Dr. Struthers was named their 2004 Veterinarian of the Year.

His wife, Bea; two sons; and two daughters survive him. One son, Dr. Howard K. Struthers (SKW '79), is a veterinarian in Ormstown, Quebec, Canada. Dr. Zweigart (OSU '49), 84, Raleigh, N.C., died Dec. 9, 2004. Executive director of the North Carolina Veterinary Board until 1990, he served as state veterinarian from 1966-1988. Following graduation, Dr. Zweigart practiced briefly in Warrenton, N.C. He then served as a field veterinarian for the North Carolina Department of Agriculture in Goldsboro, N.C.

In 1954, Dr. Zweigart joined the faculty of the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine as associate professor of pathology and microbiology. He returned to Raleigh in 1959, serving as diagnostic laboratories director with the NCDA. In 1974, Dr. Zweigart received the North Carolina VMA Distinguished Veterinarian Award. He served as president of the United States Animal Health Association in 1978.
