At the presentation, Dr. Rod Sydenham said the conference marks the end of an era, Dr. Jarrett's last as executive vice president. He has held that post since 1993, but his involvement with the AABP goes back to its beginnings. A 1960 graduate of the University of Georgia, Dr. Jarrett engaged in private practice in Rome, Ga., for five years, spent two years with the state of Georgia developing its milk quality program, and in 1967, started a dairy production consulting business. President of the AABP in 1978, he was honored as Bovine Practitioner of the Year in 1984. Last year, he received the top AABP honor, the Amstutz-Williams Award. "Jim, just as the sun never sets on AABP, the sun will never set on the legacy that you leave all of us," Dr. Sydenham said. At the AABP business meeting, AVMA President Bonnie Beaver presented a plaque to Dr. Jarrett "in recognition of his dedication, commitment, and years of service to the profession of veterinary medicine, the principles of organized veterinary medicine, and his colleagues." Later in the event, 2003-2004 AABP President Mark Spire said, "I don't think we can ever recognize how much he's done. He's just a tremendous individual who puts his heart and soul into everything that goes on in this organization." Dr. Jarrett told his AABP colleagues. "I will see you and be available to help the organization any way I can. From the bottom of my heart and from (wife) Margaret's, thank you for letting us 'play' with your organization for these 11 years." | ||
Dr. Jim Jarrett has been the face of AABP for many years, said incoming AABP president, Dr. Rich Meiring, in the Sept. AABP Newsletter. During a presentation at the AABP opening session, officials presented Dr. Jarrett with a watercolor painting of cattle on behalf of the membership. The association will donate to the Amstutz Scholarship Fund in his honor, and individuals were invited to do the same.
