Obituaries

Dr. Church (UP '47), 82, West Chester, Pa., died Feb. 28, 2004. In 1956, he established King of Prussia Animal Hospital in King of Prussia, Pa., practicing there until retirement in 1988. Dr. Church was a member of the Pennsylvania VMA. A Korean War veteran, he served in the Army Veterinary Corps, attaining the rank of captain. Dr. Church is survived by his wife, Betsy; a son; and two daughters.

Dr. Edmonds (UP '37), 89, Toms River, N.J., died May 26, 2004. He worked for the Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, first as a veterinary medical officer, and, later, as inspector-in-charge for several years, beginning in 1973. Following graduation, Dr. Edmonds worked for the New Jersey Department of Agricul-ture in tuberculosis and brucellosis eradication. From 1942 until 1963, he owned a mixed practice in Princeton, N.J. He then founded and directed a biological research company, focusing on toxicity studies.

Dr. Edmonds was a past president of the New Jersey VMA, Central New Jersey VMA, and the Delaware-Maryland-Virginia chapter of the National Association of Federal Veterinarians. He had served on the New Jersey State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners. Dr. Edmonds' wife, Doris; three sons; two daughters; a stepson; and a stepdaughter survive him. Dr. Fenimore (ISU '80), 49, Longview, Wash., died Feb. 23, 2004. A member of the Washington State VMA, Dr. Fenimore practiced at Cowlitz Animal Clinic in Longview.

Dr. Fischman (ALF '50), 84, Cockeysville, Md., died May 13, 2004. He was a retired professor at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. From 1946-1954, Dr. Fischman worked for the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration, and the Food and Agriculture Organization in China, Thailand, India, Iran, and Pakistan. He then was in private practice for six years in the United States. Dr. Fischman served as assistant director of the New York City Bureau of Laboratories and as an associate of the Public Health Research Institute of the City of New York for five years.

From 1970 until retirement in 1985, he was a faculty member of the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health's Department of Epidemiology. During this time, Dr. Fischman served as assistant dean of academic and student affairs for seven years. From 1988-1996, he served as director of the Johns Hopkins Fogarty AIDS International Training and Research Program.

Dr. Jessen (COP '48), 82, La Porte City, Iowa, died June 30, 2004. From 1951 until retirement in 2003, he owned a practice in La Porte City. Earlier in his career, Dr. Jessen practiced in Grand Rapids, Mich., and his native Denmark. He was a member of the Iowa VMA and Iowa Thoroughbred Breeders Association. Dr. Jessen's wife, Babs, survives him.

Dr. Roberts (ISU '74), 53, Apex, N.C., died Feb. 27, 2004. He was a faculty member of the North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine since 1999. Prior to that, Dr. Roberts served as staff veterinarian at the Seaboard Farms in Guymon, Okla., for four years. Early in his career, he practiced in Britt, Iowa, and owned Prairie Veterinary Clinic.

Dr. Smith (COL '51), 83, Cypress, Calif., died Feb. 26, 2004. He was a small animal practitioner.

Dr. Wenning (OSU '61), 72, Maria Stein, Ohio, died April 28, 2004. Retired, he established Maria Stein Animal Clinic in 1987. Prior to that, Dr. Wenning owned Parker Veterinary Clinic in Parker, Ind. A member of the American Association of Bovine Practitioners and the Ohio VMA, he had served as secretary of the Ohio Veterinary Medical Examining Board. Dr. Wenning authored the books "Dispensing Drugs Profitably" and "Electrolyte Balance in Calves."

An Army veteran of the Korean War, he attained the rank of sergeant. Dr. Wenning was a member of the American Legion. He served on the Mercer County Joint Township Hospital Board of Governors, Water Quality Board, and Board of Elections. In 2000, Dr. Wenning was named Citizen of the Year by the Celina-Mercer County Chamber of Commerce. His wife, Helen; two sons; and a daughter survive him.
