Obituaries

Dr. Clapp (OSU '60), 74, Clinton, Tenn., died July 4, 2003. Prior to retirement, he worked as a pathologist and cancer research scientist at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Oak Ridge, Tenn. Early in his career, Dr. Clapp served as an instructor in clinics and surgery at Colorado State University College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. During that time, he received a training fellowship for research in radiation biology, sponsored by the National Cancer Institute.

Dr. Clapp also served as director of the Marmoset Research Center of Oak Ridge, a consortium of universities and industries interested in conducting biological research in marmosets and tamarins. He directed a similar program at the University of Tennessee Medical Center. Dr. Clapp was an Air Force veteran.

His wife, Dorothy; two sons; and a daughter survive him. Dr. Crighton (TUF '89), 50, Danvers, Mass., died Sept. 8, 2003. Certified in animal chiropractic by the American Veterinary Chiropractic Association, she owned a practice in Danvers focusing on animal chiropractic, acupuncture, and homeopathy. Prior to that, Dr. Crighton's practice was in Marblehead, Mass. Earlier in her career, she practiced equine medicine at the Philadelphia Park Racetrack and Sterling Suffolk Downs in Massachusetts.

Dr. Houpt (UP '50), 77, Ithaca, N.Y., died Oct. 7, 2003. Retired, he had been a faculty member at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine and Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine for 20 years and 30 years, respectively.

In 2000, Dr. Houpt received the Alumni Award of Merit for Teaching and Research from the Penn veterinary school. A life member of the Conference of Research Workers in Animal Diseases, he published chapters on acid-base balance and water and electrolytes in "Duke's Physiology of Domestic Animals."

Dr. Houpt is survived by his wife, Dr. Katherine A. Houpt (UP '63), a veterinarian at Cornell's Animal Behavior Clinic, and two sons. Dr. McCarthy (COR '39), 90, Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., died March 28, 2003. Prior to retirement in 1986, he practiced in West Palm Beach, Fla., for 40 years. During retirement, Dr. McCarthy served as a school volunteer, receiving the 2002 Senior Volunteer of the Year Award from the state of Florida.

Dr. McCarthy was a member of the American Animal Hospital Association. A World War II veteran, he served in the Army and the Reserve from 1942-1952. Dr. McCarthy attained the rank of major. He was a life member and past president of the West Palm Beach Rotary Club. Dr. McCarthy is survived by a son and two daughters.

Dr. Reister (KSU '78), 50, Nevada City, Calif., died Sept. 5, 2003. A small animal practitioner, she practiced at Brunswick Veterinary Clinic in Grass Valley, Calif. Prior to that, Dr. Reister owned two practices in Riverside, Calif. From 1980-1998, she wrote the column "Ask the Vet" for Cat Fancy magazine. Dr. Reister was also a contributing author of pet-related articles for USA Weekend magazine.

She is survived by her husband, Gary Morey, and two daughters. Dr. Reister's brother, Dr. Brian P. Reister (KSU '82), is a veterinarian in Leaburg, Ore. Dr. Ryan (CAL '75), 56, West Point, Calif., died Sept. 27, 2003. He owned High Sierra Mobile Vet in West Point for the past four years. Prior to that, Dr. Ryan owned First Street Veterinary Medical Center, a mixed practice in Turlock, Calif., for more than 23 years. He was a member of the California VMA.

Dr. Snider (MO '62), 73, Cape Girardeau, Mo., died June 15, 2003. From 1965-1986, he was the president and owner of Sky View Animal Clinic, a mixed practice in Cape Girardeau. Prior to that, Dr. Snider practiced at Oak Ledge Veterinary Clinic in Jackson, Mo.

A lifetime member of the Missouri VMA, he served on its executive board for six terms and was named Veterinarian of the Year in 1980. Dr. Snider was a member and past president of the Southeast Missouri VMA. He served as veterinarian for the Southeast Missouri District Fair for 10 years.

Dr. Snider was a past president of the National Mastitis Council and was involved with the Farm Bureau, the Pork Producers Association, and the Southeast Missouri University Dairy and Swine Evaluation Station. In 1984, he received the Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce Agri-Business Award.

Dr. Snider's wife, Lurlyne; three sons; and a daughter survive him. His brother, Dr. Glen L. Snider (MO '77), is a veterinarian in Atlanta. Dr. Vanderloo (ISU '51), 78, Dubuque, Iowa, died Sept. 11, 2003. Following graduation and until retirement in 1989, he owned Vanderloo & White Animal Hospital in Dubuque, established by his father, Dr. V.B. Vanderloo (ISU '21). Dr. Vanderloo was a past president of the Iowa VMA. A World War II veteran, he served as a naval lieutenant in the Pacific theatre.

Dr. Vanderloo was a board member of the Dubuque County Fair for several years. His wife, Betty Mae; two sons; and a daughter survive him. Dr. Zellner (COR '45), 79, Lake Placid, Fla., died Sept. 2, 2003. Following graduation and until retirement in 1987, he owned Zellner Animal Hospital in Oneida, N.Y. Dr. Zellner was an Army veteran of World War II. He served on the City of Oneida Board of Health for 40 years, and was a member of the Rotary Club and the American Legion. Dr. Zellner's wife, Elsie; a son; and a daughter survive him. His father, Dr. Ansel K. Zellner (COR '17), was a veterinarian who had served as mayor of Oneida.
