| David R. Funk Dr. Funk (ISU '88), 38, Dunlap, Iowa, died July 10, 2002. He had been a partner at Twin Valley Veterinary Clinic in Dunlap for the past 14 years. A member of the Iowa VMA, Dr. Funk was honored posthumously with the Veterinarian of the Year Award in September. His wife, Ly-Lee, survives him. | Oliver P. Heller Dr. Heller (OSU '39), 86, Hilliard, Ohio, died July 31, 2002. From 1952 until retirement in 1995, he owned a small animal practice in Mansfield, Ohio. Dr. Heller served as a major in the Army Veterinary Corps from 1942-1946. He had served on the village of Ontario (Ohio) council for several years. Dr. Heller is survived by a son and a daughter. | Bernard F. Jahn Dr. Jahn (MIN '53), 77, Clarkfield, Minn., died June 5, 2002. Retired, he had owned a mixed practice in Clarkfield for more than 40 years. Following graduation, Dr. Jahn practiced in Minneota, Minn., for two years. An Army veteran, he served during World War II in Japan. Dr. Jahn was a life member of the Minnesota VMA. He served on the board of Clarkfield Hospital and was a member of Clarkfield Civic and Commerce, and the American Legion. His wife, Mary; four sons; and a daughter survive him. |
| John F. Kern Jr. Dr. Kern (TEX '64), 61, Pearland, Texas, died June 23, 2002. He was the owner of Animal Birth Control Inc., a spay-and-neuter clinic that he established in 1972. Prior to that, Dr. Kern was in private practice. A volunteer at local humane societies, he conducted research and published several papers pertaining to anomalies in animals being spayed and neutered. President of the South Houston Rotary Club in 1981, Dr. Kern served as an ambassador to the Mexico City Rotary Club. His wife, Elaine; a son; a daughter; three stepdaughters; and a stepson survive him. Donations may be made to a local humane society. | | Michael J. Lee Dr. Lee (MIS '88), 39, Kiln, Miss., died Aug. 5, 2002. He was in mixed practice in Kiln. Dr. Lee was a member of the Mississippi Quarter Horse Association, American Quarter Horse Association, American Association of Equine Practitioners, and National Barrel Horse Association. He was also a member of the Kiln & Hancock Business Association. Dr. Lee's wife, Shelley, and two daughters survive him. | Kirk D. Maestri Dr. Maestri (LSU '79), 52, River Ridge, La., died June 22, 2002. A small animal practitioner, he owned River Ridge Veterinary Clinic for 22 years. Dr. Maestri was a member of the Louisiana VMA and the Southeast Louisiana VA. His wife, Mary, and a daughter survive him. |
| Howard C. Nicoll Dr. Nicoll (ISU '54), 71, Tucson, Ariz., died June 19, 2002. Before retiring in 1988, he was associated with Agri-Sales Associates in Nashville. Following graduation, Dr. Nicoll served in the Army Veterinary Corps for two years. He then practiced in Riceville, Iowa, before joining Syntex-Diamond Corp. in Des Moines, Iowa, in 1976. In 1978, Dr. Nicoll joined the Biological Division of Tech-America in Omaha, Neb., becoming president in 1980. During retirement, he lectured on cruise ships for several years, speaking on retired life. Dr. Nicoll's wife, Vivian; two sons; a daughter; two stepsons; and a stepdaughter survive him. |
| Richard G. Oakes Dr. Oakes (COL '56), 75, Vancouver, Wash., died May 29, 2002. Prior to retirement in 1981, he served in the Army Veterinary Corps for 27 years. Dr. Oakes attained the rank of colonel, serving in Korea and Thailand. Selected as inaugural veterinarian during the festivities for President Richard Nixon in 1973, he was responsible for 300 horses in the parade. While at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, he served as the veterinarian to the District of Columbia and the White House. Dr. Oakes then got reassigned to the Office of the Surgeon General in the Pentagon, becoming the chief of the plans and doctrine office and senior staff officer in the Army Veterinary Corps. For his outstanding service in several leadership positions, he was awarded the Army Commendation Medal in 1968. Dr. Oakes was a member of the Association of Military Surgeons of the United States, American Association of Food Hygiene Veterinarians, and National Association of Uniformed Services. His wife, Jeane, survives him. |
| George W. Sprankle Dr. Sprankle (ONT '51), 79, Cypress, Texas, died Aug. 10, 2002. Retired since 1995, he had founded Sprankle Veterinary Clinic in Hobbs, N.M., in 1951, and Brittmoore Animal Hospital in Houston in 1968. A World War II veteran, Dr. Sprankle served as a pilot in the Royal Canadian Air Force for four years. He was a member of the Texas VMA. Dr. Sprankle is survived by his wife, B. J. | Robert F. Twilley Dr. Twilley (GA '59), 72, Marietta, Ga., died April 25, 2002. From 1962 until retirement in 1995, he owned Twilley Animal Clinic in Marietta. Dr. Twilley was a member of the Georgia VMA. A Korean War veteran, he served in the 10th Ranger Co. (Airborne). Dr. Twilley attained the rank of corporal. His son-in-law, Dr. Michael T. | William M. Whalen Dr. Whalen (KSU '79), 56, Fargo, N.D., died June 25, 2002. In his capacity as partner at Fargo-Moorhead Veterinary Associates since 1986, he co-owned the West Fargo Animal Hospital. Following graduation, Dr. Whalen practiced at the Fargo-Moorhead Animal Hospital in Moorhead, Minn., for a year. He then moved to the Airport Animal Hospital in Fargo. A member of the North Dakota VMA, Dr. Whalen had been serving as director of the board. He was also a member of the Minnesota VMA. Dr. Whalen wrote a pet-oriented column for the Midweek paper in Fargo, and had conducted a radio show of a similar nature for the past 10 years. His wife, Deedra; a son; and a daughter survive him.
