Top AAHA members honored
Dr. Goebel's current positions include special assistant to the dean at the Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine, where he earned his DVM degree in 1968; president and hospital co-director of Magrane Pet Medical Center; and president of Simmons and Associates Great Lakes Inc., a veterinary practice brokerage, appraisal, and management consulting firm. Early in his career, while a private practitioner in California, he served in numerous capacities for the California VMA and Southern California VMA. He has been a consultant to and co-founder of the Veterinary Management Institute, a joint educational program offered by Purdue's Krannert School of Management and AAHA, and is a former director of the Purdue veterinary teaching hospital. For the past 20 years, Dr. Goebel has served the AAHA in various capacities, most recently as management conference chair. Past president of the Michiana VMA, he has also served on several committees for the Indiana VMA. Dr. Clarence A. Rawlings, a professor at the University of Georgia, was honored with the Waltham Award for his outstanding contributions toward improving the well-being of companion animals in the international community. Specifically, he was noted for his study of heartworm disease, prostatic disease, and the surgical management of incontinence.
Dr. Rawlings graduated from the University of Illinois College in 1967. He was chief of the Surgical Support Branch of the Air Force School of Aerospace Medicine, and in 1974, joined the Georgia faculty. Dr. Rawlings has won numerous research grants, including four from the National Institutes of Health. He is a diplomate and past president of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons. Dr. John A. Hamil accepted the Hill's Animal Welfare and Humane Ethics Award. Active in animal welfare work, he is a former member of the AVMA Animal Welfare Committee, former chairman of the ASPCA Western Regional Advisory Board, and an active member of the California Council of Companion Animal Advocates. Currently owner of the Canyon Animal Hospital in Laguna Beach, Calif., Dr. Hamil earned his DVM degree in 1968 from Oklahoma State University. Following graduation, he became a captain in the Army Veterinary Corps through an early enlistment program. Since 1971, he has worked in private practice in Southern California. He is a past president of the California VMA and the Orange County Animal Shelter, and current vice president of the California Veterinary Medical Foundation. Dr. Sandra Manfra Marretta was honored with the Innovative Veterinary Diets Award, in recognition of her contributions to small animal veterinary medicine and surgery. After receiving her DVM degree from Cornell University in 1977, she continued her education at The Animal Medical Center in New York City, where she became a staff surgeon in 1980. She joined the faculty of the University of Illinois in 1990, where she is now an associate professor of small animal surgery and dentistry. Dr. Manfra Marretta has won a plethora of grants for dentistry work and recently collaborated on a National Institutes of Health dentistry and craniofacial research project. She is a diplomate and past board member of the American Veterinary Dental College, and a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons. Dr. Wayne Hunthausen accepted the Friskies Petcare Award, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to feline and canine behavior medicine. Since receiving his DVM degree from the University of Missouri in 1979, Dr. Hunthausen has worked extensively in the field of companion animal behavior. Currently, he is director of Animal Behavior Consultations and practice owner of Westwood Animal Hospital, both in the Kansas City area. A past president of the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior, he is a frequent lecturer and writer on animal behavior. Several animal hospitals that have met the AAHA's standards for veterinary care for 50 and 25 years were also honored at the meeting. The 50-Year Hospital Award recipients were Foothill Veterinary Hospital, Pasadena, Calif.; Povar Animal Hospital Ltd., East Providence, R.I.; Sandhill Veterinary Hospital, Southern Pines, N.C.; Stephenson Veterinary Hospital Ltd., Rockford, Ill.; Ticehurst Animal Hospital, Red Bank, N.J.; Tucson Small Animal Hospital, Ltd., Tucson, Ariz.; and Willowrun Veterinary Hospital, Smithfield, N.C. | ||||||||||
n March 25, at the annual meeting of the American Animal Hospital Association in Boston, several veterinarians received awards including Dr. Richard A. Goebel, West Lafayette, Ind., who was honored with the Practitioner of the Year Award.
