When veterinarians find it hard to obtain an approved human drug, they can consult a new FDA Web site to see why the drug is not in sufficient supply.

At www.fda.gov/cder/drug/shortages/, the FDA Center for Drug Evaluation and Research lists drugs that are in limited supply, the reason for the shortage, advice on facing shortages, and product recalls and warnings.

Approved human drugs may be used in an extralabel fashion in compliance with the regulations of the Animal Medicinal Drug Use Clarification Act.
