Executive Board member singled out
On March 24, the Massachusetts VMA presented its most prestigious award, the Distinguished Service Award, to Dr. Henry Childers, owner and director of the Cranston Animal Hospital, Cranston, RI. A small animal practitioner in Cranston, Dr. Childers is the AVMA Executive Board member representing District I. He regularly submits articles to the MassVet News to keep members informed about AVMA developments. In recent years he has been instrumental in raising the quality of the MVMA's continuing education conferences by recruiting top-level speakers. Dr. Childers has also encouraged the MVMA to undertake a Massachusetts veterinary history project, with emphasis on the former Middlesex veterinary school. Dr. Childers received his DVM degree from Auburn University in 1954 and spent three years in the U.S. Army, which ultimately stationed him in Boston as a food inspector. A diplomate of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners, Dr. Childers has chaired the ABVP's Continuing Education Committee and served on its Council of Regents. In addition to his practice, Dr. Childers holds two positions at Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine: director of the First Year Problem-Based Learning program, and assistant clinical professor, responsible for canine and feline pediatrics and involved in cardiology labs. He also serves on the Advisory Board of the Becker College Veterinary Technician School. Dr. Childers' extensive service to the profession has included the presidencies of the Rhode Island VMA, New England VMA, and the AAHA. For the AVMA, he has served on the Council on Public Relations, Council on Education, Committee on Veterinary Technician Education and Activities, and Scientific Program. He is also past chair of the Rhode Island Veterinary Board of Examiners and past president of the AAHA Foundation. | ||
