Veterinary colleges announce new deans

Dr. Herbert E. Whiteley

Whiteley to return to Illinois as dean

Dr. Herbert E. Whiteley, head of the department of pathobiology and veterinary science at the University of Connecticut, will return to the University of Illinois as dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine, pending approval of the UI board of trustees.

From 1984-1995 Dr. Whiteley was a faculty member in the UI department of veterinary pathobiology. He served as interim department head in 1994. He had also been a member of the UI graduate program in neuroscience and the neuronal pattern analysis group at the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology.

Dr. Whiteley will assume his new duties Aug 21. He replaces Dr. Victor E. (Ted) Valli, who is retiring after serving as dean since 1989.

Provost Richard Herman said, "Herb Whiteley is a proven administrator, has a strong research background, and is held in high regard nationally. We believe that these fine qualities all point to his ability to lead the College of Veterinary Medicine to greater levels of excellence."

At Connecticut, Dr. Whiteley has served as professor and department head since 1995. He is also the director of the veterinary diagnostic laboratory, interim director of the Office of Animal Research Services, and a member of the Center for Biochemical Toxicology. He received his DVM degree in 1977 from Purdue University and a doctorate in pathology in 1984 from Colorado State University.

Dr. Howard B. Gelberg

Gelberg accepts deanship at Oregon State

Dr. Howard B. Gelberg of the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine has been named dean of the Oregon State University College of Veterinary Medicine. He begins his new duties July 1, succeeding Kelvin Koong, the interim dean, who will return to the College of Agricultural Sciences.

Dr. Gelberg has been a faculty member and administrator at UI since 1980. For the past three years he has been associate dean for research at the College of Veterinary Medicine, simultaneously serving as assistant director of the Agricultural Experiment Station.

His experience includes private practice in New Hampshire and New York, and consulting for private industry. He has worked as a research scientist at the USDA's Plum Island Animal Disease Center and as a veterinary officer with the US Department of Commerce in Alaska.

OSU Provost Tim White said, "Howard Gelberg has the vision, the experience, and the ability to take the College of Veterinary Medicine to the next level of accomplishment." Citing a JAVMA article Dr. Gelberg authored, "Blueprint for the future of veterinary medicine" (Aug 1, 1998), White said the new dean will play a key leadership role in transforming the college.

Dr. Gelberg earned his DVM degree (1971) and PhD degree from Cornell University. He is a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists. His research interests center around the investigation of host cell/pathogen interactions in gastrointestinal infections, and the role of sialic acid in kidney function.

Bayly named dean at Washington State

Dr. Warwick M. Bayly has been appointed dean of Washington State University's College of Veterinary Medicine. In January 2000 Dr. Bayly succeeded the previous interim dean, Dr. Terry McElwain, as interim dean. Dr. McElwain had been interim dean since the retirement of Dean Emeritus Borje Gustafsson in 1998.

Dr. Bayly has been at WSU for more than 20 years and was named the first, four-year Robert B. McEachern Distinguished Professor in Equine Medicine in 1995. He has also served as the college's associate dean for continuing education and as interim chair of the department of veterinary clinical sciences.

"Dr. Bayly has done a remarkable job during his tenure as interim dean," Provost Ron Hopkins said. "He's enthusiastic, a solid administrator, and has a strong background and experience in both research and academics. We are certain his leadership of the college will continue to advance WSU's place among other world-class institutions. ..."

Originally from Melbourne, Australia, Dr. Bayly earned his veterinary degree from Melbourne University in 1974. He has a PhD degree from the University of Liege, Belgium, and is board certified by the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine.

Dr. Bayly is currently president of the World Equine Veterinary Association. He was president of the Washington State VMA in 1993.
