Ratites and squabs now come under the USDA-FSIS' mandatory inspection regulations for poultry products, according to an interim final rule effective April 26.

The agency amended the Poultry Products Inspection Regulations and the Voluntary Poultry Inspection Regulations in response to the FY 2001 Appropriations Act signed by President Clinton last October.

Previously they were covered under the voluntary poultry inspection program of the Agricultural Marketing Act of 1946.

Comments on the interim final rule, which was published in the May 7 Federal Register, must be received by July 2 by the FSIS Docket Clerk, Docket #01-045IF, USDA-FSIS, Room 102, Cotton Annex, 300 12th St SW, Washington, DC 20250-3700. The rule can be found in the Federal Register online at www.access.gpo.gov/su_docs/aces/aces140.html.
