Travel to veterinary schools in Scotland, New Zealand, and Australia seeking approval from the Council on Education was authorized by the Executive Board for select council members and AVMA staff.

The council grants "approved" status to foreign veterinary colleges/schools that meet or exceed the standards outlined in the Policies and Procedures of the AVMA Council on Education. Graduates of approved colleges/schools do not need to be certified by the Educational Commission for Foreign Veterinary Graduates to sit for state licensure examinations in the United States.

Full site visits are scheduled this year for the University of Edinburgh Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies, Edinburgh, Scotland, and Massey University Institute of Veterinary, Animal, and Biomedical Sciences, Palmerston, New Zealand.

Also, an AVMA team will conduct a consultative site visit this year at the Murdoch University Division of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences, Perth, Australia. The purpose is to provide the university with an unofficial evaluation of its veterinary school's compliance with accreditation/approval standards.

The schools are responsible for the expenses of the AVMA teams, as well as an administrative cost. Relatedly, the board approved a separate recommendation to increase the fees charged to foreign veterinary colleges seeking approval. The council determined that the adjustments were needed to recover current AVMA costs.

Effective Jan 1, 2002, the new fee for a consultative site visit is $8,500 (from $8,000); a full site visit is $12,000 (from $10,000); and a short site visit is $2,750 (from $2,500). The $1,000 charge for a review of the college's annual report remains unchanged.
