The AVMA Executive Board approved three sets of guidelines developed by the Committee on the Human-Animal Bond:

  • AVMA Guidelines for Veterinary Hospice Care outlines the issues to be addressed when providing this service. Some veterinarians already offer hospice service, and others are just beginning to explore the possibility.
  • AVMA Guidelines for Pet Loss Support Services combines the AVMA's former guidelines on pet loss support helplines, guidelines on pet loss support groups, and a statement on the use of the Internet for pet loss counseling.
  • AVMA Wellness Guidelines for Animals Used in Animal-assisted Activity, Animal-assisted Therapy, and Resident Animal Programs was developed to assist veterinarians who are asked to evaluate animals in these programs. This is a companion document to the AVMA Guidelines for Animal-assisted Activity and Therapy Programs.

AVMA staff has sent copies of the guidelines to each state veterinary medical association, allied group, and veterinary school/college. To request a copy, contact Darci Reagan at AVMA headquarters, (800) 248-2862, ext 211.
