In Memoriam

Dr. Byron (AUB '77), 56, Sarasota, Fla, died Sept 13, 2000. He owned Fruitville Veterinary Clinic in Sarasota from 1980-1994. He also owned Pet Wellness and Moore Animal Clinic in Sarasota, and had been chief of staff of the emergency clinic at Central Animal Hospital in Tampa. Dr. Byron was head veterinarian for Circus World in Orlando and served as a consultant with the Ringling Bros and Barnum & Bailey Circus elephant compound in central Florida, and worked with the exotic animals at Busch Gardens in Tampa.

In 1987, Dr. Byron was awarded the Geraldine Page Wildlife Fellowship to Tufts University to be trained to rehabilitate wildlife. His surgical technique on elephants led to his being invited to Thailand in 1988 to share his knowledge with the United Nations World Health Organization. Dr. Byron was a member of the Florida VMA and Southwest Florida VMA, and a founding member of the Sarasota County Animal Welfare Advisory Committee. Memorials may be made to the Dr. H. Dr. Clark (ISU '52), 77, Monmouth, Ill, died Oct 8, 2000. Dr. Clark practiced from 1952 until his retirement in 1996. He served as the state veterinarian for Monmouth Livestock Sales Co for more than 40 years. Dr. Clark raised Landrace swine and was a past president of the American Landrace Association. A first lieutenant during World War II, he received the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. Dr. Grossman (COR '38), 88, New York, NY, died Oct 6, 2000. He was retired from a small animal practice.

Dr. Jensen (MIN '65), 59, Stacy, Minn, died Oct 11, 2000. He founded the Minnesota Veterinary Hospital in Shorewood. A Minnesota VMA member, he was active in local veterinary organizations, was a director of the Veterinary Hospital Association, and was an avid horse owner. Dr. Jensen served a tour of duty in the Army Veterinary Corps. Dr. Kobrow (IL '60), 70, Kenosha, Wis, died Oct 23, 2000. He was retired from a small animal practice.

Dr. Lundvall (ISU '44), 79, Boone, Iowa, died Sept 5, 2000. He retired as professor emeritus in 1989, after 26 years at Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine, where he had served as chairman of equine medicine and surgery.

Dr. Lundvall was a lifetime member of the Iowa VMA and lifetime charter member of the AAEP. He served as a captain in the Army Veterinary Corps. Memorials may be made to the Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine companion animal fund.

Dr. Pearce (TEX '56), 68, Gilmer, Texas, died Oct 11, 2000. He owned a small animal practice in Garland, Texas for 15 years. Memorials may be made to Pollard United Methodist Church, 3030 New Copeland Rd, Tyler, TX 75701.

Dr. Prewitt (MO '73), 52, Thayer, Mo, died Oct 11, 2000. He practiced for five years in West Plains, Mo, before moving in 1978 to Thayer, where he established Thayer Veterinary Clinic, a predominantly bovine and porcine practice. A past president of the Southwest Missouri VMA, Dr. Prewitt did veterinary work for Ozarks Regional Stockyards for many years, and owned a beef cattle operation with his family. Dr. Purvance (COL '53), 79, Orem, Utah, died Sept 7, 2000. Retired, he had owned a small animal practice.

Dr. Strong (MSU '40), 85, Palm City, Fla, died Oct 13, 2000. He owned Strong Veterinary Hospital in Livonia, Fla, for 20 years, until his retirement in 1980. Prior to that, Dr. Strong had practiced in Springfield and Sturgis, Mo, and in Detroit. He started the artificial insemination program for Defiance Milk Products Co in Ohio, and was chief veterinarian for the Northwest Ohio Breeders Association. He also taught veterinary hygiene at the University of Georgia. As a captain in the Air Force, Dr. Strong worked as a public health veterinarian in Japan for the Disease Control Office of the Military Government Activity of the Army of Occupation.
