Work in Washington as a Congressional Science Fellow
Applications are now being accepted for the 2001-2002 AVMA/AVMF Congressional Science Fellowship. Congressional Science Fellows serve for one year as consultants, researchers, and scientific resources on the staffs of members of Congress or congressional committees in Washington, DC. The fellowship begins around Sept 1. The American Association for the Advancement of Science coordinates fellows from 60 participating scientific organizations, including the AVMA. Applicants should demonstrate competence in an area of veterinary medicine, possess a broad professional background, and hold an interest in using scientific knowledge to solve societal and public policy problems. They must show the capability of working on a wide range of topics that may extend beyond their area of expertise. A stipend of $50,000 is paid by the American Veterinary Medical Foundation with donations from state and allied organizations, the AVMA and its Auxiliary, and other sources. Individuals interested in applying for the fellowship must submit the following: a letter of intent; a curriculum vitae; two letters of reference from professional colleagues; a letter of support from the applicant's local, state, specialty, or allied veterinary medical association; and a personal statement (not to exceed 750 words) describing the applicant's qualifications, commitment to veterinary medicine, and reasons for their interest in the fellowship. All materials must be received by Jan 16, 2001. Applicants must be AVMA members and US citizens.
