Grants support innovative research by veterinary students
The Merck-Merial Animal Health Grants Program has awarded grants totaling more than $410,000 this year. As a result, 14 US veterinary schools have offered veterinary students research-based project opportunities to advance their knowledge of basic and applied research in veterinary medicine.
Students at the University of California-Davis will use their $30,000 grant to fund scholarships to study vector-borne diseases. The University of Georgia will use its grant to support a research training experience for second- and third-year veterinary students. Other schools plan to use the money to allow students the opportunity to spend a summer as research fellows.
"The Merck-Merial Animal Health Grants Program encourages veterinary schools to identify unmet training needs within their curricula, and then we provide necessary support for the schools to offer these customized programs," says Dr. Kevin Schultz, vice president, research and development, Merial.
