In Memoriam

Dr. Douglass (TEX '44), 83, Metairie, La, died June 20, 2000. He owned a large animal practice. Dr. Douglass served 23 years with the Louisiana Livestock Sanitary Board and worked for more than 20 years for the Louisiana Racing Commission as a track veterinarian. Dr. Douglass was a member of the AAEP and the National Horsemen's Benevolent and Protection Association, which recognized him for special service in 1986. He was a founding member of the Louisiana Thoroughbred Breeders Association. The Louisiana VMA named Dr. Douglass its Veterinarian of the Year in 1985.

Dr. Golden (ALF '52), 76, Cliffside Park, NJ, died May 24, 2000. He owned a small animal practice.

Dr. Grey (AUB '45), 77, Woodbridge, Conn, died May 30, 2000. He served in the Army from 1943-1944 and 1950-1953 as captain in the 51st Veterinary Animal Service Detachment in Germany. He was an assistant professor at Colorado State and Louisiana State universities before being sent to Mexico in 1949 as assistant to the technical co-director of the US-Mexican Hoof-and-Mouth Disease Commission. Dr. Grey practiced in Woodbridge from 1953-1962, then received a National Institutes of Health fellowship to study pathology at the University of Connecticut. In 1964, he became director of the Institute for Comparative Pathology at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, New York. From 1966-1968 he helped organize and manage the Children's Committee for Biomedical Careers at the Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center. Dr. Grey was also active in local 4-H Clubs. He retired as professor emeritus of comparative pathology in 1985.

After his retirement, Dr. Grey served as a consultant in veterinary pathology and taught at Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine in St Kitts, British West Indies. Dr. Headley (OSU '58), 67, Angola, Ind, died May 15, 2000. A member of the Indiana VMA and Northwest Indiana VMA, he owned Grand View Veterinary Clinic, a mixed practice in Angola. Dr. Hruska (MSU '51), 82, Green Bay, Wis, died May 12, 2000. A member of the Wisconsin VMA, Dr. Hruska worked as a veterinary pathologist at the State Animal Health Laboratory in Madison, Wis, for 22 years. He had been an AVMA fellow from 1958-1959 and was briefly a research associate at Diamond Laboratories in Indianola, Iowa. Dr. Hruska served three years in the Army Signal Corps during World War II. Dr. Silverman (LUD '63), 70, Fort Lee, NJ, died May 27, 2000. He owned a small animal practice.

Dr. Turner (PUR '65), 60, Richmond, Ind, died May 24, 2000. He owned a mixed practice, and raised and bred prized Black Angus cattle. A member of the Miami Valley Angus Association, he received the Pioneer Award in 1999 for more than two decades of service. Dr. Turner was also a member of the Indiana Angus Association, served as its president in 1989, and received the President's Outstanding Award in 1999. He was president of the Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine Alumni Association from 1996-1997 and was named the distinguished alumnus in 1999.
