Equine research grants awarded

The AAEP announced recipients of nine research grants at its board of directors meeting in February.
The following three projects will share nearly $25,000 in research money. These therapeutic options projects are the first to be funded by the AAEP. The AAEP board voted to again award therapeutic options research grants in 2001.
The recipients and projects for 2000 are:
- Dr. Alfred M. Merritt II, Island Whirl Equine Colic Research Laboratory, University of Florida: "Effect of acupuncture on visceral pain in an equine colic model"
- Dr. A. S. Murton, Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences, Louisiana State University: "Use of acupuncture to stimulate cyclicity in anestrus mares"
- Dr. David M. Hood, Department of Veterinary Physiology and Pharmacology, Texas A&M University: "Response of horses with chronic laminitis to electroacupuncture, infrared light, or phenylbutazone"
The AAEP awarded $22,489 in grant money to six residents or graduate students pursuing equine research. The recipients and projects are:
- Dr. Stephanie S. Jacks, Department of Large Animal Sciences, University of Florida: "The pharmacokinetics of azithromycin in foals and in vitro susceptibility"
- Dr. Merijo Jordon, Department of Veterinary Pathobiology, University of Florida: "Epidemiology of equine tapeworm"
- Dr. Anne Grimsley-Cook, Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences, Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine: "Permeability of the blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier to antibodies against sarcocystis neurona in the neonatal foal"
- Dr. Julia E. Tomlinson, Department of Clinical and Population Sciences, University of Minnesota: "Detailed ultrasonographic mapping of the normal and diseased equine pelvis"
- Dr. Teri Leichner, Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences, Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine: "Comparison of pulmonary lymphocyte apoptosis in normal and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease-affected horses before and after dexamethasone administration"
- Dr. Kristina Johnson, Large Animal Surgery and Medicine, Auburn University: "Evaluating the effect of antibiotics on motion characteristics and plasma membrane function and integrity of stallion sperm"
