Future Leaders Program FAQ

Q. Who is eligible to apply for the Future Leaders Program?

A. AVMA members who graduated from veterinary school in 2001 or later.

Q. How are participants selected?

A. Up to ten participants are selected each year. Preference will be given to those nominated by a principal or constituent allied veterinary medical organization of the AVMA. Preference is also given to applicants with some sort of previous leadership experience, especially if it includes previous attendance at the AVMA Veterinary Leadership Conference, service in SAVMA as an officer or delegate, service in a veterinary school SAVMA Chapter as an officer, attendance at the AVMA Veterinary Leadership Experience, and/or experience in state and allied veterinary medical organizations.

Each year the selection committee is composed of a veterinarian who serves on the AVMA Board of Directors, a veterinarian who serves on the AVMA House Advisory Committee, and a member of AVMA staff.

Q. Can I self-nominate?

A. Yes! It is not a requirement to be nominated by an allied organization.

Q. What’s the time commitment?

A. There are several in-person meetings, as well as regular electronic and telephone communications throughout the yearlong program. Participants agree to participate in the following meetings:

  • Two 2-day/2-night in-person meetings in Schaumburg, Illinois
    • One kick-off meeting in late August (date TBD)
    • One meeting in late May/early June (date TBD)
  • One 3-day/3-night in-person meeting at the AVMA Veterinary Leadership Conference in Chicago, Illinois (required dates: January)
  • The AVMA Annual Convention (required dates: July)

Q. What sorts of activities would I be doing over the course of the year as a Future Leader?

A. It’s a busy, fulfilling year, so get ready! As a Future Leader, you can expect to...

  • Prepare communications (videos, quotes, public speaking) for use in promotional activities.
  • Interact regularly with a veterinarian leader to advise you on increasing your leadership potential over the course of the year.
  • Do a 360-degree assessment to find out your leadership strengths and opportunities according to the findings of yourself and colleagues you ask to participate.
  • Set short- and long-term goals and work towards their achievement, interacting with High Impact Facilitation’s Dr. Ken Andrews who generously donates his time to the program.
  • Hear lectures on leadership, including lectures from veterinarian leaders who have blazed their own paths over their careers.
  • Work with your team and AVMA staff to manage and follow through a team project with a goal of providing novel resources for AVMA members to be able to use.

Q. Is the project the main goal of the program?

A. No. While it is an important goal because the resources developed by the team become a service for AVMA members to use (for example, career transitions resources, cultural competency resources found on our Diversity and Inclusion site, and leadership resources prepared by previous classes), the project work is used to facilitate development of each individual’s leadership skills through working on a dynamic team of leaders. The individual leadership skill development component of the program is just as important, but it requires more self-starting and work as an individual between meetings, since the in-person meetings are more for lectures and teamwork on the project.

Q. Who covers the Future Leaders’ expenses?

A. The costs of travel associated with AVMA Future Leaders Program are generously covered by the Program’s sponsor, Zoetis. As previously mentioned, facilitation for the program is generously provided by Dr. Ken Andrews of High Impact Facilitation. Administrative support for the program is covered by the AVMA.
