The AVMA Educational Commission for Foreign Veterinary Graduates® (ECFVG®) helps veterinarians become licensed in the United States (U.S.) by providing an educational equivalency assessment certification program—the ECFVG certification program.

The ECFVG certification program is accepted by all U.S. state veterinary regulatory boards and the U.S. federal government as meeting, either in part or full, the educational prerequisite for licensure or certain types of employment.

The ECFVG certification does not equate with state licensure, and ECFVG certificate holders must still complete all state licensure requirements, including passing the national licensure examination (currently the NAVLE) and any state-specific examinations. That is why it is essential for all veterinarians seeking state licensure to fully understand what is required by each state regulatory board.

The ECFVG certification program consists of four steps designed to be completed in order:
