Tackling early-career challenges: New webinar series

Published on
AVMA Virtual Convention

A new webinar series on AVMA Axon® explores real-world challenges veterinarians may face in the workplace, applying the framework of grand rounds to non-clinical topics like communications, interpersonal relationships, and malpractice.

In each session, presenters use the grand rounds format to work through the subjective, objective, and assessment of a situation. Learners come away with a plan to handle each type of scenario, and gain knowledge and tools to sail more smoothly through difficult practice situations.

The first two webinars in the series are available now for on-demand viewing on AVMA Axon:

  • Grand rounds: When and how to speak up explores ways to manage difficult work situations, effectively give and receive feedback, and respond to teammates who challenge us.
  • Grand rounds: Navigating malpractice complaints addresses how to handle potential complaints against your veterinary license: preventing malpractice claims, understanding individual needs for license defense coverage, and navigating the claims process.

At least two more courses in the series are planned for release later in 2022. The courses are free for AVMA and Student AVMA (SAVMA) members, and available to other veterinary professionals at a cost of $25 per webinar. Subscribe to the AVMA Axon newsletter to be among the first to know when these and other new courses are added to the digital CE library.

The grand rounds courses are being developed in conjunction with the My Veterinary Life podcast and are especially pertinent to early-career veterinarians, who might not yet have faced the situations covered. The webinars are led by a combination of veterinary professionals, veterinary students, and AVMA representatives.

More resources for early-career veterinarians

AVMA has many other tools to help veterinarians in the early years of professional life. Chief among them is MyVeterinaryLife.com, a dedicated website that brings together information and resources to help new and soon-to-be veterinarians navigate the transition from student to full-time professional.

For more light-hearted support, tune in to the My Veterinary Life podcast series. You’ll hear inspiring stories from guest veterinarians about the journeys, challenges—and often hilarious anecdotes—that led them to where they are today.
