Registration opens for AVMA global food security summit

Food Security Summit: Understanding the Role of Animal Health & Well-being an AVMA Global Summit February 9-11, 2017It seems fitting to announce the opening of registration for the February 2017 AVMA summit Food Security—Understanding the Role of Animal Health & Well-Being in the wake of World Food Day, which was celebrated yesterday, Oct. 16.

World Food Day recognizes the 1945 founding of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), whose purpose—to free humanity from hunger and malnutrition and to effectively manage the global food system—underpins today’s global food security initiatives.

Food security, as defined by the USAID, means having, at all times, both physical and economic access to sufficient food to meet dietary needs for a productive and healthy life. The role that livestock play in food security—and, more specifically, the role of their health and well-being—will be the focus of the 2017 AVMA global food security summit.

Taking place February 9-11, 2017, at the Grand Hyatt in Washington, DC, the summit will introduce and explore constructive public and private stakeholder partnerships involving national and international relief and development organizations and the veterinary community to promote and enhance global food security. The concept for the summit originated with the AVMA Committee on International Veterinary Affairs, which is charged with proposing programs, initiatives and strategic partnerships to create and enhance global opportunities for AVMA and SAVMA members. The summit program is being developed by a broad-based organizing committee with representatives of non-governmental organizations, funding agencies and AVMA member veterinarians.

The objectives of the summit are to:

  • Explore and define the role of animal source foods in enhancing global food security
  • Describe and define how improved animal health and well-being contribute to a more secure, sustainable, safe, and nutritious food supply
  • Identify and promote pathways to integrate veterinary expertise into current and future global food security programs

The summit will be a facilitated, interactive meeting, with input from the audience adding to information shared by presenters, all resulting in a report and action plan for those organizations attending. There also will be time set aside for networking.

Who should attend the food security summit?

Those working or interested in enhancing food security at the national and international levels are encouraged to attend the summit. This includes, among others:

  • Representatives of nongovernmental, governmental and intergovernmental organizations
  • Veterinarians and veterinary paraprofessionals
  • Representatives of organizations and industries that produce animal source foods for human consumption
  • Educational providers—particularly those focusing on skills and competencies related to food security
  • Practitioners and researchers (e.g., nutritionists, ecologists, phytosanitarists, infectious disease specialists) focusing on the value of animal source foods and/or enhancing food security

Registration for the summit is limited to 200 attendees, so we strongly encourage you to register early to secure a seat.
