Published on

Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly becoming an integral part of daily life—including in veterinary medicine. From enhancing clinical decision-making to advancing research, AI is reshaping the field in ways once unimaginable. A new AJVR supplemental issue will help you navigate this evolving landscape with confidence.

“From Bark to Bytes: Artificial Intelligence Transforming Veterinary Medicine” is now available as both a special digital flip book and on the AVMA journals website. Just choose your preferred format and start exploring the present and future of AI in veterinary medicine.

AJVR supplement cover March 2025 - Artificial intelligence

Whether you embrace AI tools with optimism or a healthy dose of skepticism, this special issue offers valuable insights into their potential, challenges, and future direction for all species and practice types.

It represents a collaboration between the AVMA journals and organizers of the first-ever Symposium on Artificial Intelligence in Veterinary Medicine: Drs. Casey Cazer, Parminder Basran, and Renata Ivanek-Miojevic, who served as guest editors for the issue. And it's just one example of how the journals, alongside AVMA's Taskforce on Emerging Technologies and Innovation, are supporting practitioners in considering and adopting new technologies.

Interested in the big picture?

  • Explore existing and emerging applications of AI and machine-learning models.
  • Understand the science behind AI, including its limitations and ethical considerations.
  • Learn how AI may be used to support regulatory processes and safety surveillance for veterinary medical products.

Curious about specific clinical applications?

Delve into real-life use cases like these:

  • AI-powered sensors and predictive models to detect bovine respiratory disease before signs appear
  • Data extraction from visual media (“computer vision”) for accurate dog-breed identification
  • Machine-learning models for early disease detection in cats
  • ChatGPT prompts for generating client education content in multiple languages

AI’s influence in veterinary medicine goes beyond clinical practice. It’s also revolutionizing research. The supplement shows how AI is being used to strengthen surveillance of antimicrobial resistance and predict outbreaks of infectious diseases.
