The AVMA Board of Directors recently established the Committee on Antimicrobials (CoA), which will be advisory to the board and will have oversight of all antimicrobial issues for the AVMA. Bringing such expertise and oversight into a single entity promises to better focus expertise and resources, as well as enhance effective and timely decisions on antimicrobial issues.

The committee will develop and recommend an overarching strategy that will allow the veterinary profession to effectively share robust and comprehensive recommendations for policy, and its implementation with legislators, regulators, the marketplace and other stakeholders. Further, the committee will serve as the lead AVMA entity in the association’s collaboration with similarly focused stakeholders—including the human medical community—in a One Health approach to the overarching issue of antimicrobial resistance.

VolunteerOpenings_TwitterThe committee will consist of nine voting seats, each filled by a primary member and an alternate member, both of whom must be AVMA members with backgrounds in pharmacology, microbiology, epidemiology, public health, or a documented history of productive and collaborative contributions in the areas of antimicrobials and/or antimicrobial resistance.

Nominees for primary and alternate members to fill eight of the nine voting seats will be requested from allied veterinary associations. To fill the ninth seat, which is an at-large position, the AVMA is soliciting nominations for a primary and an alternate member with demonstrated background and expertise in public health from the general membership.

The AVMA Board of Directors will consider nominees and appoint members to the committee. If the board rejects nominees for the at-large position, additional nominees will be solicited from the AVMA membership. The term for the at-large seats is three years.

Nominations for the at-large position must be received by the Office of the Executive Vice President by July 25, 2016, and include a completed Committee Nomination Form and a resume (2 page maximum, single-sided) of the nominee’s qualifications.  Nomination materials may be submitted by e-mail to OfficeEVPatavma [dot] org, fax to (847) 925-0944, or mail to AVMA Office of the Executive Vice President, 1931 N. Meacham Road, Suite 100, Schaumburg, Illinois 60173.

The first scheduled in-person meeting of the CoA will be held at AVMA headquarters in Schaumburg, Ill., November 14-15, 2016.
