New CE webinar: Using VFD drugs in aquaculture

Published on May 25, 2017

catfish-aquaculture-vfdThe newly-revised Veterinary Feed Directive (VFD) changed the rules for how medicated feeds can be used with any food animal species in the United States, including in aquaculture. A new educational webinar available free of charge to AVMA members outlines what aquatic veterinarians need to know to comply with the new rule when treating their patients.

This short webinar – running about 17 minutes – explains the requirements of the VFD rule, the aquatic veterinarian's role, and how to issue a VFD order when needed. The presenter, Dr. Patricia S. Gaunt of the Mississippi State College of Veterinary Medicine, also covers VFD feeds that are approved for treating fish and other aquatics; how requirements for aquatic veterinarians have changed under the new VFD rule; extra-label use of medicated feeds for aquatics; and more.

Veterinarians who watch this webinar may take an optional quiz at the end to earn 0.5 hour of continuing education (CE) credit.

After viewing the webinar, veterinarians should be able to:

  • Identify the categories and types of drugs affected by the VFD rule
  • Know how to issue a VFD order
  • Understand the various responsibilities of veterinarians, producers, distributors and manufacturers under the VFD regulation

The webinar is part of a growing suite of educational and practical tools available to help AVMA members understand and comply with the VFD requirements. These also include a fillable VFD order form, step-by-step instructions for filling it out, and a link to AVMA PLIT information regarding liability questions related to the VFD rule. Another recent addition to the site is a set of resources for veterinarians interested in learning more about honey bee medicine.
