QR codes surged during the pandemic—some useful, some frustrating. While using your phone to view a restaurant menu from a QR code might sometimes interrupt the flow of a conversation, a well-placed QR code in a visual presentation can make it easier to access resources and reduce the friction of following up.

The same principle applies in clinical settings. When used thoughtfully, QR codes can improve the client experience by offering helpful information at just the right time.

This week’s challenge: Spend 15 minutes improving the client experience by identifying and adding just one QR code to a client-facing resource.

Here’s how to get started: 

  • Think like a client. Where might they want more information—without having to ask or search for it?
  • Avoid high-traffic areas. QR codes are best used where clients naturally pause, like the waiting area or exam room—not in hallways or other areas they pass through quickly. 
  • Check connectivity. Poor cellular service will make QR codes more frustrating than helpful.
  • Be specific. Don’t link to a generic homepage. Use direct links, and include a few words to make it instantly clear what the QR code is for.

Try one of these:

  • Posters or flyers that list websites: Add a QR code to reduce the hassle of typing in a URL. This is especially helpful for clients with less-than-perfect eyesight or a lot on their minds.
  • “Meet the Team” pages: Help clients connect with your staff by linking to bios that highlight experience, expertise, and personality—no social pressure needed.
  • Payment options: Provide a link to your clinic’s payment policies or financing options, so clients can explore in their own time.

How to make a QR code

You can generate QR codes using free online tools. Just search “generate a free QR code” to see numerous options. Upgrading to a paid option often gives you access to additional tracking and editing features. If you’re linking to a vendor resource, ask the vendor—many can provide a trackable QR code.

And don’t let the pursuit of the “ideal QR code” hold you back. Pick one resource. Add one QR code. Test it. See what happens. You can always refine your approach based on what works best for your clients.
