Veterinary practices across the country are exploring innovative solutions to manage workforce challenges and optimize patient care. Grab a copy of AVMA’s newest telehealth case study to discover how one emergency hospital implemented wireless wearable devices to improve patient care, save time, and get better outcomes.

When COVID-19 hit, the Charleston Veterinary Referral Center saw an increase in the number of critical cases requiring intense monitoring. The veterinary team had its hands full providing continuous, high-quality patient care. At the same time, challenges with staffing and the shift to curbside care were cutting into productivity and efficiency.

The team began using a wearable device to monitor patients for 24 hours after certain surgeries. The technology improved patient monitoring by letting team members see changes in vital signs in real time, and respond to complications quickly. It also decreased the amount of time technicians spent manually obtaining vital signs, which enabled them to see more patients and achieve other goals to improve the overall quality of patient care.

New telehealth coalition continues to grow

New organizations continue to join the Coalition for Connected Veterinary Care, a recently formed alliance committed to empowering veterinarians to explore and integrate telemedicine technology in practice.  First announced in August at AVMA Convention, the coalition has since grown to encompass more than 40 veterinary, animal health, and telehealth organizations.

AVMA is a lead partner in the coalition, which provides advocacy and resources that respect the integrity of the veterinarian-client-patient relationship, ensure continuity of care, support practice efficiency and success, and meet client expectations and patient needs.

If you’re ready to leverage the convenience and benefits of telehealth in your practice, AVMA’s telehealth resource center has all the tools you need to get started or expand your offerings. Find everything from basic definitions and FAQs, to information on VCPR compliance, a step-by-step implementation guide, and downloadable tools to help you identify and evaluate vendors.
