Tell us your concerns, and get resources for wellness and success
Editor's Note: This post was updated on Feb. 6, 2017, to reflect a change in location for the telemedicine discussion involving AVMA Director of Animal and Public health Dr. Kristi Henderson.
Will you be in Florida for the North American Veterinary Conference (NAVC) this weekend? We’d love to meet up with you there to discuss your interests and concerns, and update you on the AVMA’s work on issues ranging from veterinary wellness to telemedicine.
The AVMA has a wide range of wellness and well-being resources for veterinarians and other veterinary professionals, including online wellness tools, help for veterinarians combatting cyberbullying, a new pilot program training AVMA and SAVMA members to identify and help colleagues who might be considering suicide, and a LinkedIn community dedicated to veterinary well-being. Dr. Marci Kirk, AVMA assistant director for recent graduate initiatives, will discuss wellness-related topics, including the AVMA’s resources and ongoing efforts, during two presentations in the NAVC Health and Well-being Center. Her presentations will take place Sunday, Feb. 5, from 2:10-2:30 p.m., and Wednesday, Feb. 8, from 9:55-10:15 a.m. You also can get information about the AVMA’s wellness initiatives in the AVMA booth in the exhibit hall: Booth #2701.
Telemedicine is another important issue for the veterinary profession, and one that the AVMA is working on actively. Dr. Kristi Henderson, director of the Animal and Public Health Division, will discuss the AVMA’s work leading up to the Practice Advisory Panel’s final report on telemedicine and your opportunity to comment on the report. The presentation will be part of a telemedicine panel discussion scheduled for Monday, Feb. 6, from 2:45-3:45 p.m. in the Orange County Convention Center, in the Chapin Theater.
Tools for your clinic, your business and your career
Please visit us in Booth #2701 in the exhibit hall, where we’ll have a wide array of resources to share with conference attendees. We’ll show you how to access our economics reports, which cover a wide variety of data and demographics, as well as resources for practicing veterinarians. See examples of client education materials like brochures, coloring books and other tools to help teach your clients about veterinary care and responsible pet ownership.
If you haven't yet renewed your AVMA membership for 2017, our booth assistants also can help you do that on site, ensuring your continued access to the full suite of AVMA benefits. Members have until March 31 to renew; after that, membership benefits will no longer be available to those who did not renew.
While you’re at the booth, be sure to ask about the AVMA Veterinary Career Center (VCC), a powerful tool for conducting a job search, finding qualified job applicants, navigating career transitions and more; as well as opportunities to provide your input on both existing and new AVMA policies, including development of the first-ever AVMA Guidelines on the Depopulation of Animals.
Joining the AVMA in Booth #2701 will be representatives of the American Veterinary Medical Foundation (AVMF) and the Partners for Healthy Pets. Be sure to ask about the AVMF’s Veterinary Care Charitable Fund, which can help your clinic accept charitable donations for clients facing hardship, as well as other AVMF initiatives and the many tools available through the Partners for Healthy Pets.
Another opportunity to meet up with both AVMA staff and volunteer leaders will be at a networking event planned by the Women’s Veterinary Leadership Development Initiative (WVLDI) on Sunday evening, Feb. 5. Dr. Bridgette Bain, assistant director of analytics in the AVMA's Veterinary Economics Division, will give a brief presentation, and discussion is expected to include areas for possible economics research that speak to pay gaps and compassion fatigue where gender is a factor. The event takes place from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at the Hilton Orlando, Lake Mizzell Room.
