AVMA legislative fly-in

Capitol building: Empowering the veterinary profession

The AVMA regularly hosts legislative fly-in events that bring veterinarians and veterinary students to Washington, D.C., to meet directly with their lawmakers and staff.

Works directly with congressional staff, the AVMA schedules each meeting. Once in Washington, participants receive in-depth briefings on top policy issues affecting veterinary medicine, then meet with their members of Congress to advocate on these issues.

These important interactions ensure that the voice of the veterinary profession is amplified on Capitol Hill. During the 2024 fly-in, over 140 veterinary professionals participated in more than 180 meetings with congressional offices. Participants came from 42 states and represented 15 different veterinary schools.

Fly-in participants learn how to develop relationships with their elected officials and become trusted voices of veterinary medicine. That unique, hands-on experience makes this event an impactful opportunity for both veterinarians and veterinary students.

Grants are available to help SAVMA members participate in the fly-in.
