The AVMA hosts legislative fly-in events that bring veterinary students and veterinarians to Washington, D.C., to learn about the top policy issues affecting veterinary medicine and meet with their members of Congress to advocate on those issues.
The next fly-in event will be held virtually on April 21, 2021, and will include over 250 participants, making it the highest attended legislative day in AVMA history.
The fly-in opens participants' eyes to the many ways in which AVMA and SAVMA members can use their veterinary expertise to shape public policy.
In 2020, the AVMA spent the first day of the workshop introducing participants to the legislative process and discussing legislation that impacts the veterinary profession. Participants reviewed legislative issues they would later discuss with Congress, and practiced their presentations through interactive role playing. On the second day, participants visited Capitol Hill to meet with elected officials and advocate on behalf of the veterinary profession.
