AVMA weighs in on FDA compounding guidance​
With help from our members, the AVMA submitted a letter to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Aug. 14 that responds to how the agency would regulate compounding animal drugs from bulk drug substances. The FDA is seeking feedback on its list of bulk drug substances by Nov. 16.



Former AVMA fellows reflect on Capitol Hill experience​
Drs. Elise Ackley, Chase Crawford and Carrie La Jeunesse spent the past year working on Capitol Hill as staff to members of Congress. As they move onto the next chapter of their careers, they reflect on their time as AVMA Fellows.




End of fiscal year nears with spending unresolved
Congress has been unable to reach an agreement on its 12 annual appropriations bills, which fund federal programs and agencies important to veterinary medicine. Now, it has until Sept. 30–when funding ends for the current fiscal year–to negotiate, or the government will shut down.



AVMA, AAEP submit petition urging USDA to consider changes to the Horse Protection Act​
In an effort to end soring once and for all, the AVMA and the American Association of Equine Practitioners submitted a petition to Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack urging the agency to consider regulatory changes to the Horse Protection Act.

Students: apply to AVMA-GRD's externship program by Oct. 16
Calling all veterinary students interested in public policy—the application for the 2016 AVMA Governmental Relations Student Externship Program in Washington, D.C., is now online. All applications are due by Oct. 16.
