Formal title: Docket Number [APHIS-2008-0010] Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy; Importation of Bovines and Bovine Products; Notice of Proposed Rule
The USDA APHIS proposed to amend the regulations that govern the importation of animals and animal products to revise the conditions for the importation of live bovines with regard to bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE).
The AVMA compliments APHIS for considering amendments to the regulations that govern the importation of animals and animal products dealing with the conditions for the importation of live bovines and products derived from bovines with regard to BSE and concurs with its proposed approach. The AVMA believes the proposed approach is consistent with the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) guidelines and that removing BSE import restrictions of cervids and camelids and products derived from such animals. The AVMA agrees that these approaches would continue to guard against the introduction of BSE into the United States, while allowing the importation of additional animals and animal products into this country.
