AVMA member Dr. Ted Yoho pulled off a major upset and won the August 14 Republican primary in Florida’s 3rd district. The political newcomer defeated incumbent Rep. Cliff Stearns, a 12–term Member of Congress, by slightly more than 800 votes, about 1 percentage point. Stearns formally conceded the race on August 15. Yoho has practiced both large and small animal veterinary medicine in the north Florida area for over 28 years. In addition to being an AVMA member, he is also a member of Florida Veterinary Medical Association and the Florida Association of Equine Practitioners. Yoho will run against Democratic candidate J. R. Gaillot, also a political newcomer, in the general election in November.
