Michael L. Whitehair received his DVM from Kansas State University (KSU) in 1974. He is currently a partner in the Abilene Animal Hospital, P.A., in Abilene, Kan. His clinical interests include beef cattle, feedlot, and equine medicine. The practice also includes three veterinarians who are health and production consultants in swine medicine and three veterinarians who focus on companion animal medicine, surgery, and equine practice.
He served as the Kansas Delegate in the AVMA House of Delegates (HOD) from 1997–2011 and served from 1998–1999 and from 2003–2009 on the House Advisory Committee (HAC) for the AVMA HOD. During his service as HAC chair, Dr. Whitehair was a non-voting member of the AVMA Executive Board. In 2008, he served on the selection committee for the AVMA Executive Vice President. In 2010, he was on the AVMA 20/20 Vision Commission and on the AVMF Scholarship Committee for Rural Recent Graduates.
Dr. Whitehair is a member of the America Association of Bovine Practitioners, American Association of Equine Practitioners, Academy of Rural Veterinarians, and the Kansas Veterinary Medical Association, serving as KVMA President in 1993 and from which he received the 2008 Distinguished Service Award. He is also a member of the Academy of Veterinary Consultants and served on the AVC Board of Directors from 1989–1992. He was AVC President from 1998–1999.
Dr. Whitehair has been active in KSU volunteer service. He has been a presenter for senior students interested in food animal medicine at the College of Veterinary Medicine at KSU since 2006.
He is or has been involved as a community leader for over three decades in Rotary, the local chamber of commerce, the Central Kansas Free Fair Board, the Eisenhower Foundation, his church council, school board, and the Pinnacle Bank Board.
He and his wife of 40 years have two married children and one grandchild. He enjoys reading, horseback riding, and outdoor sports.
