Dr. H. Fred Troutt, 74, died on December 4, 2010. He served as a member of the COE from 2001 to 2007 and as the Council's chair from 2006-2007. In addition, he also served on the AVMA Strategic Planning and Council Selection Task Force Committees.
Former COE members remember him as a man who was thoughtful, experienced, erudite, orderly of mind, hard-working with an enduring love for students the educational process and veterinary medicine.
Over the course of his career Dr. Troutt held numerous positions in academic veterinary medicine. He was a staff clinician and Assistant Professor in Food Animal Medicine and Surgery at Purdue University; a Research Associate with the National Institutes of Health Special Post-doctoral Research Fellow at the University of Missouri; an Associate Professor at the University of Georgia, College of Veterinary Medicine; and has held professorships at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, University of California-Davis and (most recently) the University of Illinois, College of Veterinary Medicine, Department of Veterinary Clinical Medicine.
At the University of California-Davis he also served as Director of the Veterinary Medicine Teaching and Research Center. At the University of Illinois he served as Head of the Department of Veterinary Clinical Medicine from 1988-98 and Chair of the Food Animal Production Medicine Consortium. In July, 2010 Dr. Troutt accepted the position of Interim Director of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital at the University of Illinois.
