The Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) Board of Directors determined at its meeting on January 24, 2011, that the AVMA Council on Education is eligible to undertake a recognition review. The purpose of CHEA recognition is "to advance academic quality, demonstrate accountability, and encourage where appropriate scrutiny and planning for change and needed improvement."(http://www.chea.org/pdf/Recognition_Policy-June_28_2010-FINAL.pdf).
To achieve recognition the COE will submit a self-evaluation report providing evidence that it meets CHEA recognition standards, and demonstrating the quality of their activities and the value of their service to higher education and the public. A representative from CHEA will visit a COE accreditation decision making meeting to observe how the COE's activities relate to CHEA eligibility and recognition standards. The CHEA Committee on Recognition will review the self-evaluation, the report of the observation visit and any third party requests for comment and make a recommendation to the CHEA Board of Directors.
