The Universidad Nacional Autonoma de México Facultad de Medicina Veterinaria y Zootecnia (UNAM) has notified the Council on Education that it will appeal the Council's accreditation decision made during at its spring 2010 meeting. Accreditation decisions are confidential until finalized; however, an appeal is considered public knowledge. Now that an appeal has been requested UNAM has 60 days from when it was first notified of the adverse decision to submit documentation supporting its appeal.
Under the current COE appeal process, the AVMA Executive Board will appoint a hearing panel comprised of five persons, none of whom shall be members of the Council on Education or AVMA staff. Hearing panel members are required to sign a Conflict of Interest Statement. The hearing will be held near the AVMA office in Schaumburg, not more than 120 calendar days following receipt by AVMA of the petition for appeal submitted by UNAM. The United States Department of Education (USDE) has issued new recognition guidelines for accrediting agencies that go into effect July1, 2010. These regulations will result in some changes to the current appeal process that will apply to the UNAM appeal in accordance with direct guidance from the USDE.
The hearing panel will submit a written report of its decision, which will become permanent record of the COE. The Executive Board, and dean and chief officers of UNAM will receive copies.
