Kenneth Simpson, DVM

Recipient: AVMF/AKC Career Achievement Award in Canine Research 2013

Dr. Kenneth Simpson received the AVMF/American Kennel Club Career Achievement Award in Canine Research and presented "Unraveling Host-Bacterial Interactions in the Gastrointestinal Tract: An Uncultured Approach". The take home message from his talk was that many diseases that are presumed to be primarily inflammatory in etiology may actually have an underlying microbial component. His work, using advanced methods for detection such as Fluorescent In Situ Hybridization, has detected bacterial infiltration in conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease when traditional bacterial culture methods have come up short. Dr. Simpson reported that, 'inflammatory' conditions such as IBD or pancreatitis can sometimes be successfully treated with antibiotics rather than, as he referred to it, "Vitamin P" (prednisilone).
